Headache

YAHOO! Completed my second half and I remember it this time because it wasn't so hot, LOL!!
But, it seems anytime I run a run 20K or over, I get a headache and someone told me this is not uncommon. Like black toenails I guess. Yep, got them too by the way......
Anyway, my run was Sunday Oct 14th and my headache is just starting to go away now.
So the question I'm curious about is why it happens to begin with? Stress or something? I'm in good health.
Thanks Coolrunners!

I tend to have the same problem if I am not careful about nutrition and hydration before, during and after the long run. I've heard various things - dehydration tends to get the most votes.

Yeah I've had headaches to. I usually take 4-6 advil before the run and this usually prevents headaches. I think the key is just to focus on something else.

To answer the OP, my guess would be that dehydration is a likely cause, but am at a loss if you are hydrating well.

No. It hurts my stomach sometimes, but I just use Tums or something like that.

I'm with the hydration guess. Besides something serious, the only other thing I can think of is lack of sleep. I get wicked headaches when I go to higher altitudes (e.g. Denver) also.

Trailboy,

I'm trying to figure out if you are trolling, or serious. For now I'm going to assume you are serious.

Given that assumption, I suggest you consult with a Doctor about taking 4-6 Advils before you run. I'd advise against taking 1 or 2, but 4-6 is some serious medication and if you do that with any regularity you could be headed for all kinds of problems, most likely with your stomach and kidneys. But then, I'm not a doctor and perhaps a doctor would know of a legitimate reason for doing this.

I'm with the hydration camp. Whenever I get a headache, it's from not enough water. Try a sports drink, too.

Not so suprised on the 4-6 motrin, especially depending on weight. After pregnancy - that labor thing and shrinking uterus and all, it was recommended by nurses and docs to go up to 4 advil, and even double up with tylenol if needbe.

As for the headaches, Ive now ran into 2 migraines, that hit near ends of a run. Still trying to figure out the culprit, if its some kind of exercise induced. Only had migraines with pregnancies -not pregnant - so know them when I feel them. Plus am careful to keep hydrated. Strangely, I also wonder if its eye related, and my sunglasses buggin with my brain.

4 Advil are the same as prescription strength motrin so it is very commonly recommended but usually for short periods of time-maybe a couple of weeks-for pain.

However, studies have shown that taking advil/motrin/ibuprofen after strenuous activity is actually harder on your kidneys-so I would assume this would hold true for before as well so you may want to be careful with the use of advil with running. Tylenol-1000 mg (two extra strength) is a better choice.

I avoid motrin all together cuz I only have one kidney. My husband takes care of the other one for me! ; )

Thanks for the advice. It never has bothered me in the past, but I will check with the doc.
