Sore Ankles

Hello,

I've been running for about 8 months now. I am up to about 20 miles per week and my longest run is about 8 miles. I just started to get sore ankles after my runs. I've done some research and a lot of websites suggest worn shoes, but my running shoes only have 255 miles on them (I keep track with my running log). I have never sprained my ankles and I haven't done anything different with my runs, so I wonder why my ankles are starting to get sore. I ran 6.2 miles on Sunday and yesterday when I ran again (3 miles) my ankles were really sore the whole time. Now today my ankles are sore when I walk. Does anyone have any other explainations besides worn shoes? I did run a different route yesterday that had a big hill, but I jogged up the hill at a nice slow pace. Plus, it was just one hill so I don't think that would cause my sore ankles. My ankles were sore last week as well and I did my normal flat route. Any suggests would be greatly appreciated.

How well do you stretch your calves? Hills do funny things to make you sore.

255 miles can be enough to wear out your shoes. Ideal pair of shoes is 500 miles, but it depends on your weight, your gait, the surface you run on, whether or not they've gotten wet....
I get about 300 to 350 miles now,but I used to only get about 250. The longer I've been running the longer I seem to be able to use a pair.

You might try getting a new pair and wear them on alternating days and see if it makes a difference.

sounds funny..but I had this problem. Turned out my right heel was smacking my left ankle. Changed insoles and also made a little lift out of extra insole material from another shoe and put in under right heel. Bingo. No more slapping my ankle

The only time I had ankle issues was running on a tilted sidewalk near my house. Soon as I figured out what it was, I started running on the road when I got to that bit and the ankle pain disappeared.

I suggest you get a new pair of shoes and just try it out since you will need a new pair sooner or later anyway. I made the same mistake. I stuck to a pair of racing flats for a long time and the outside of my left ankle was perpetually sore and tight. I tried stretching but it really did not help. It was always stiff and would hurt if I stretched it and it wasn't flexible. I got a new pair of racing flats and the soreness went away after just 3 to 4 days. The thing is, although the soreness is gone, it just isn't the same anymore. It is definitely stiffer than my right ankle although the condition is much better as opposed to the past so I suppose some permanent damage might have been done. I suggest you get a new pair of shoes and give it a shot.

I too endorse the idea of a second pair of shoes. I used to get pain in my foot (Plantar Fascitis). When I bought a neutral shoes after I have been running in ASICS 2110's (which are mildly supportive for over pronation), the pain went away.

Now I always alternate my runs between the two shoes. It also helps that one of the pair is older than the other and I never have to run in a brand new pair on any of my long runs or races, since I have my older pair until I break in the new ones. Hope that made sense.

have you tried joint pills? msn glucosamine and condriotin? i had troubles with my knee and ankle for the better part of a year and didn't run for most of it because of that. i'm 22 and fairly active most of the day but still it didn't get better.
i started taking those a few months ago and havn't had any problems since
