What should I eat before a training session

Hey guys and gals. I'm doing the C25k plan and am wondering what I should eat and how long before a run I should eat it.

You probably don't need to eat. I run in the early mornings on an empty stomach and am good for up to around 11-12 miles before I need any nutrition.

Hydration is far more important. Drink water all day, everyday! You probably don't need to carry water on your runs til you are running an hour or more.

Good luck with the C25K program!

I agree. No need to eat anything before any of the runs on the C25K program. Just hydrate well.

tough call - I say a Double Double from In N Out...

my real answer - I train on an empty stomach for the most part - you just need to figure out what works for you

and my $.02 on hydration (for morning runners) if wait to hydrate in the morning before you run, you're too late

Re: What should I eat before a training session
For a first thing in the morning run, I might have some gatorade. For a long run (10+) I will try to eat something light, like a banana and gatorade.

Currently, I swim for about an hour then do a 45min run. I'll have some gatorade before/during/after the swim, and finish it after the run. I'll have some sort of snack (yogurt, OJ, granola bar) on the way home.

For a mid-day run, I will have a light lunch, then run 1-2 hrs later.

For an evening run, I wait 2-3 hrs after dinner. I plan ahead when I fix dinner. Shish-ka-bobs and chicken corn chowder are THE WORST! Burpage issues...

Basically, it's going to be a matter of trial and error...

Re: What should I eat before a training session
Unless you determine from experimentation that you really need something in your belly to feel at your best, there is no real reason to eat before a run you are likely to encounter in the C25K program. Just try and maintain a balanced and nutritious diet overall. You do need to make sure you are properly hydrated before, during (if the length of the run exceeds about an hour or so), and after.

I run first thing (5:30-6:00 AM) for my long runs, and have done about 18 miles with nothing but water, gatorade and a sport gel 1.5 hours in.

Again, do maintain a balanced diet so your body will have energy for the run, and nutrients to recover afterwards.

Water is all you'll need before any run. Your body has enough fuel stored up to literally run for hours. I've run for three and a half hours on nothing but water and a little sports drink.
