Speedwork help!

476 yr old mom preparing for a 5 mile race. I want to increase my speed. Any suggestions for a program or websites? My current plan is runnning the 5 mile route every other or 3rd day. Today I started running faster for a few minutes then slowing down. Time today was 46:14 pace 9:22 I ran my first 5K in October 27:11 pace 8:46. I would be thrilled to run this longer race at that 5K pace, but am anxious not to get hurt! Thanks for suggestions!!

There are many wiser than I....hopefully they will chime in. But speedwork? Not yet...it's been said that speedwork is "icing on the cake"...you don't even have cake yet! (That was not meant to sound mean) Spend some time working on building endurance...your only "speedwork" should probably be a tempo run (say your running 30 mins...the middle 10 mins try and pick up the pace) Other than that, a 5 mile race will require a fair amount of endurance for any speedwork to be worthwhile...have one longer run in the week, say shoot for 60 mins...but very easy paced. Have a couple easy runs in the week at an easy pace and then a tempo run (as described above)...build a base to put the speed on at the end...we don't want to see you get hurt...good luck!

PS: You should win your age group no matter what (476 year old mom)

INcrease your distance first. Once you get into the 25+ MPW range you can look at speedwork. Even beyond that, increasing distance will naturally increase your racing speed.

At 476 years old, you should be wiser than any of us.

You definitely need to run farther before you can run faster. Work on getting comfortable running at least 20 miles a week before considering any type of structured speed work. By that time you will have the necessary physical toughness and endurance to benefit from it with getting hurt.

WOW...you are an inspiration to all to still be running at 476! And at 9 minute/mile pace as well!

Sorry...couldn't resist!
