P90X

anyone have any real experience with this conditioning program? The infomercials are very compelling, even for a skeptic like me. $120 for a video series though? I see lots of commercials for fitness programs, equipment, etc., and almost all seem like garbage, but this one really piques my interest...... pretty intense stuff, by the looks of it. In January of this year I resolved to add a couple sessions per week of strength work to my running, and have managed to keep it up. Even though on the lighter side, I'm enthused with the gains I see, and wonder what an intense program like this would do. Anyone actually do the program? What feedback do you have?

Re: P90X
I've done the P90X rotation once (3 months). It's a good program, but personally, I lost leg strength on it. I didn't like the yoga (endless sun salutations, thought it was boring) or Kenpo (boring) workouts. It has incredible core exercises though. Still do those. Think PlyoX is good for running too.

My sons use it now. They love it and have had great results with it. Friend borrowed it, likes most of the workouts and also had great results with it.

You need a pull up bar for best results!

I did a P90X session last fall and am in the middle of another session this fall. I do not follow it exactly, as I just do the 3 strength routines per week as a compliment to running/elliptical. I do the AbRipperX usually on different days than the strength. I do not use any weights for the leg exercises, I just do high reps of the squats/lunges with body weight only.

It is a definite body muscle grower, at least in the upper body. I am on about day 50 of the 90 and I am amazed by the results. My wife seems to like me a lot more lately and my 5 & 6 year old kids have said enough about my muscle changes that I know others can see the changes that I see.

I honestly think it is a good compliment to running if you stick with lower weights and higher reps, but I am not an expert so there may be something better out there. I definetely feel stronger and more confident when I run the past month and a half.

I think if you do regular cardio, eat healthy and do a 90-day P90X strength session, you will find yourself pretty ripped-up.

Dutchie and Ace- thanks for the feedback; nice to hear something from actual users. Sounds like there is some credibility to this program, as I suspected.<HR>

Note that I struggled some last autumn the first time I used P90X. It was a little advanced for me. I fatigued early (could not always finish), was learning the movements and was trying not to over-do it. However, I still saw significant strength and muscle growth.

This time around, things are going much better. I am able to keep up with the exercises and do the bonus exercises as well. I think changes are happening twice as fast this time as the first time around. I have less "pride" this fall- I keep going, even if that means help with a chair on pullups or I end up on my knees for pushups after failure. I am using lighter weights, using better form, and seeing better results that I did with heavier weights.

Re: P90X
I am currently in the last phase of the P90X program. I am using the program as my primary aerobic base work and adding technique sessions in swimming, biking and running to fill out additional training hours. In the past 70 days I have seen dramatic increases in both strength and endurance. What I think is the most important aspect of the program is the workouts are designed to allow your body to "relearn" how to work as a cohesive unit. There are very, very few movements that I am able to find that don't require you to recruit other muscles in order to balance and stabilize. You are always using multiple muscles in concert to achieve effective movement. This muscle cooperation is what I believe is the true value of the program. As a result not only have I posted PR's in running, swimming and biking but I'm experiencing a dramatic improvement in all sports from basketball to yoga. I'm not sure about other folks, but all of my previous weight room maxes have been increased by any where from 10% to 20% depending on the exercise... I don't know how anyone could actually lose leg strength using the program unless their running was excessive. I only run once per week right now and am seeing an increase in both speed and endurance.

Re: P90X
My girlfriend bought it for the strength training and I use it for the yoga and weight training on cross training days. I haven't used all the videos yet, but the yoga will certainly kick your *** - all 90 minutes of it. On a personal note, the guy is really annoying after a couple of times, but there is an option to turn off the sound, which I plan to employ soon. Also it's kind of disturbing to be looking at guy for so many hours with so much Botox pumped into his face ... If you can afford the $120, it's probably a good investment for cross training days. You do also have to invest in a a few supplements/props/additional equipment.
