mapmyrun.com

How accurate is mapmyrun.com compared to my car? I just measured my run on the website and it said I went 4.5miles where as my car says I went 4.4miles. Anyone with similar experiences or any advice as to which is more accurate? I know a tenth of mile is nothing but the website is pretty cool and I would like to use it in the future but don't want to be running the wrong distance.

The car is far less accurate than mapmyrun. I find my Garmin 305 (GPS) and MapMyRun are very close. I would trust MapMyRun. Try mapping with the satellite photo if on a trail or park and you can get an even more accurate measurement.

I don't know that I'd agree with Marnee that the car is less accurate than mapmyrun. That's not been my experience. I had pretty good luck with mapmyrun.com until just recently. I measured a new route and after logging a few runs with times much faster than they should have been I got suspicious. I drove the route and it came up a good .3 miles short. My run times would support that. I don't trust mapmyrun.com anymore. Fortunately DH gave me a Garmin for my B-Day so now I'm good to go.

That being said, that new route is the only time that mapmyrun.com has let me down so overall I'd say it's fairly accurate. I'd prefer to underestimate my distance rather than overestimate though.

I think these web mapping sites are very accurate. It is good to zoom in as much as possible, though. I mapped a route on the default view, then zoomed in some and could see how far off the actual path I veered in places just because I was not viewing close enough.

That's so funny that you ask this, I had some weirdness with mapmyrun, I planned out an 8 mile route one time, and then when I came home to do the stats, plotted out the same route and it said 7.5 miles. I don't think it is always accurate.

Make sure you use the hybrid view and zoom in close. I've all different views and find when I use the default view and have it panned out it cuts bits out here and there - meaning when I zoom in I can see that my line does not even come close to following the path!

Yes, this is correct. You need to use the satelite or hybrid view. Occasionally, the road on the default view doesn't follow the actual road that you see in the satelite view.

I would trust MayMyRun, and the multitude of other options, before I trust my car odometer. My Garmin has been very close to distances I get with the online mapping tools.

Cars on not even close to being as accurate on Mapmyrun or GMaps. Different size tires (even tire pressure deviations) and poor calibration with the speedometer/odometer make automobiles less accurate. Proof of this sometimes lies with driving a course with two different vehicles I own. I'll drive my BMW and get 5.1 but my Suburban shows 4.95. One of my runs is a local half marathon course. My car says 13.4 and the truck 13.2. Gmaps shows exactly 13.11. I would most definitely trust the gps sites as being more accurate.

How can you measure distance on a trail using MapMyRun?
Trails do not show up on a street view and it is hard to
trace a trail that wind thru a wooded area on a satellite view

Is there such a thing as bike odometer? We can use it to
estimate a distance on a course off limits to cars.
