Ok, I did not read the whole thread, but here is what I know. Running keeps the arthritis in my knees at bay. I really don't know how or why, but it does. The problem is that running does absolutely nothing for the arthritis in my hands. My knees were quite bad at one point. They would get to the point where they would stiffen up and be very painful. This has not happened at all since I started running a bunch. (I mean like 60-80 mpw) I also rarely get colds now, and when I do get a cold, it is very mild.

I guess peeps don't read much about excersize though. Otherwise they would already know these benefits.

I can't remember the source, but I read a study they did over like 2 yrs of 50-60 year olds. Half they had join a running club, the other half not. Those that ran has a LOWER incidence of injuries. Running has a protective effect on joints as it stimulates continued rejuvination and blood flow to areas that otherwise would get minimal blood flow.

The only exception was the group who had previous serious knee injures. After injury, running DID make things worse.

runninlaw - that's a very sad story...sorry about the smarta$$ comment from your friends, and I'm sure they don't really mean it.

FWIW, I used to believe. I had "bad knees" after high school and college running. I was an avid cyclist - no bad knees! Let's just say we didn't know as much back then.

Now I'm in my mid-40s and running completely painfree in the 20-30 mpw range. I know that's not a lot of miles, but I couldn't do it 25+ years ago. The difference is training smart.

I've tried to tell others that the knowledge base has expanded, but, pphhttt! It doesn't go anywhere. It's OK. So smile at your friends and amaze your cardiologist.

Make no mistake; Ryan Shay got in trouble and died after running 5 miles. Marathon didn't kill him; it was pre-existing issue that he had. If marathoning actually kills people, we would have seen a lot more people dropping dead over that weekend (Trial and NY marathon). The truth is; a lot more people would have been dead if they didn't take up running.

I'll echo the sentiments of another poster, in that those making the comments are sedentary and probably overweight, no?

I've never heard adverse comments from people here in Florida; actually, I've had the opposite, in that most people I come across thinks it's great that I'm out there running (or swimming). But, then again, many people here are into fitness. I must see 10 or more runners when I'm out and about training... and cyclists, open water swimmers, people doing yoga, et c. (I train on the beachfront).

I am curious about the demos involved in such remarks.

I often point to my own experience. In August of 2006, I weighed 354 pounds. I had severe arthritis in my knees, ankles, and hip. I was pre-diabetic with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Then I started running and eating right. I'm now 130 lbs lighter, NO arthritis at all, perfect blood sugars, great cholesterol numbers, and perfect blood pressure.

One of the guys in my running circle is 92 years old. He's run at least a mile a day, everyday for 35 years. He didn't start running until he was in 40's. To talk to him, you'd swear he was in his sixties. So much for running shortening his life or its quality.

yea, but if he keeps it up, it'll kill him and he won't live to be 100! Running is dangerous and causes brittle bones, i hear....and i bet his knees really hurt a lot too.....

When people tell me the "running will ruin your knees" I replay with "GREAT!, I've been running for 50 years. When do you think they will start to hurt?"

Don't laugh..it happened to me,I had to give up sex
my testicles were interfering with my running.
But my knees are fine!

Quite frankly, Im sick of using "running is unhealthy" as an excuse to be lazy. It's the kind of BS that I tend to ignore.
