Suggestions/recommendations on non-race driven training???

Hey gang...

I am curious... for those of you who run just for the love of running, how do you generally structure your training for the week?

Let's say it would be based on a 20-mile week..

Basically, I am looking for a reasonable way to spread out the mileage when I am NOT getting ready for a race...

Thanks in advance!
Dan

Re: Suggestions/recommendations on non-race driven training???
I run based on time. I plan a longer run on the weekend... up to two hours or so... depending on the weather. During the week I run after work, between 30 and 45 minutes, depending on how I feel, how late it is, weather, etc. I aim for 5 running days a week. ... I don't consider it "training." i'm just running because it's so much fun and I'm so happy that I can do it.

Like you, I'm not running for a race, or to seriously train. I don't usually use a watch (I'll strap on my dh's garmin to do a long run, though).
Currently, I'm running about 20 a week. It's comfortable, and my goal is consistency. Sometimes I'll do a couple less, sometimes a couple more. With 20 mpw, 4 days is sufficient. usually it'll look like something like this...

Great question. I'm interested in hearing what others are doing.

Before I started racing, I would just run 4 days per week, run longer on one day and faster on one day. I made sure to mix it up as much as possible - training without a specific goal is difficult for me.

Re: Suggestions/recommendations on non-race driven training???
I mostly run on trails and rarely race. When I do race, I approach it like a group run, not a competitive effort. Also, I have a tendency to get injured if I don't cross-train. Typical week, taken from Maffetone:

M -- 45 minutes, stationary bike
T -- 45-60 minutes, run
W -- 45-60 minutes, run
T -- 45 minutes, stationary bike
F -- 45-60 minutes, run
S -- off
S -- 75-180 minutes, run

All of this is down below my MAF heart rate -- which I find keeps me from overdoing anything and risking injury.

I aim to run approximately one hour most days of the week. I will usually alternate 8K one day and 12K the next. I usually take Sat. off and will run somewhat farther on Sun. Not that much farther - perhaps 15 or 16K.

This routine gives me a one hour cardio workout daily and allows me to run any race up to a Half more or less on demand. But I don`t run a race with any real expectation of winning or even a PB. I just run races to support a charity and-or as a social event.

I run two marathons a year and that's it. Most of the time, I just run without any specific training goal. I do the marathons to force me to do runs longer than 13.1 miles. I run half marathon distance once a week.
