If you need to burn calories, it's all about the distance. Watch your calorie consumption.

According to the multiple MAFF Training threads, and the associated links, you burn fat by running or walking in your aerobic zone, which is generally defined by 180-age.

Cut out processed foods and gradually build up your running by 1% week. Eat mostly fruits, veges, beans, and nuts. If you want ripped abs then do some ab work on the side...crunches, hanging knee raises, etc. Good luck!

Burning fat and loosing fat are two very different things. As most everybody has said, you simply need to burn more calories than you consume in order to loose fat. Cut out the junk calories, eat a healthy diet, and exercise.

Incorporating weight training (full body calisthenics -- lots of medicine ball, press ups, squats etc) on top of some calorie restriction has allowed me to lose over 25 lbs and several % points body fat while just a beginner runner! I started running in June or so.

I recommend caloriecount.about.com for calorie tracking, allowance and calorie burn calculations.

Im a little confused as to what the original poster REALLY wants. In order to lose fat but not lose weight you must be replacing that weight with muscle mass.

Sounds like you need to find a balance between low calorie diet and weight training if that's the case.

A good method for fat loss is a healthy diet couped with weight training and a form a cardio called HIIT proved to work the best for fat loss. I get flac from the low HR crowd on that one but to lose fat by jogging you need to do LOTS of it. Not every average Joe wants to do that. Google search the term HITT.

I would also like to point out that you cannot target the loss meaning you cannot lose just fat in the belly area without losing it anywhere else it decides to come from.

It sounds like you are at a happy weight but I'm guessing you got the pinch test done and they told you you have a high body fat percentage?

My suggestion is the same as the others restrict calories and lift weights.

Course with a restricted Cal intake and running i've been rearranging... down a whole pant size (plus a little) but the scale doesn't hasn't really moved. But that would probably depends on your stats.

Diet (eating right) is the key to fat loss. You will ride a fine line between improving preformance and taking in too much to loose fat.
Last year I weighed 265 lbs, today I am at 204, up from my low of 190, but I'm trying to put muscle mass on and you can't do that and loose fat at the same time.
Running along with diet changes helped me loose the 60 lbs and now I am in control of my weight.

You need protien and carbs for the machine to work. Initially cut out the refined sugar and enriched flour, High fructose anything should also be avoided. Then consume 1 gm of protien for each lb of body weight. Learn to read food lables. Websites like http://www.whfoods.com/[/URL" target="_blank"> can help sort out some stuff also.
Good carbs to eat include brown rice, beans and most vegtables and fruit. Cut back on the pasta and white potato.

Don't forget to watch the fat intake, but don't get rid of fat because your body needs it.
I do cardio about 6 days a week. A fair amount of running 18 to 20 miles a week, and fill in the other time on the bike, stairs, or eliptical. I also weight train most days.

It is what worked for me, good luck

Bogus

You actually burn more fat, faster and longer by anaerobic running. MAFF training teaches your body to uptake more fat as opposed to glycogen as fuel for endurance events. That training eventually gets you to a certain point before you need to switch gears to develop speed and strength for PR's. Your body adapts and becomes efficient so you'll need to make it less efficient by pushing harder. That phase (mesocycle) has a set point where you'll need to revert to base training. Follow runawayjessie's recommendation with HIT training.
