Have worked up to running for 3 miles (34 mins) - now what?

This is my first time using these forums so I hope you don't mind me barging in. I started jogging a couple of months ago. I did too much too soon and ended up injured. I have since slowed my pace (down to just over 5mph instead of 6mph) and worked up to 30 mins continuous jogging. What should I do now? Should I work on speed, distance, hills? At this point I am not really looking to run races, I just want to be fitter and not find the running so difficult! I am very scared about increasing the speed of running as that is what I did last time and I ended up injured. Any advice would be very welcome!

Work on distance run per week. Not speed, not hills.

How many times are you running per week?

If it's less 3 or less, try adding a day without increasing the length of each run.

If it's 4 or more, try increasing the length of each run by 5 minutes.

Whatever you do, maintain it for 2-3 weeks before increasing again.

In principle, yes.

In practice, the Newbie Cafe is a support group and special interest group forum. Basic Training has taken the role of Newbie Cafe. Mainstream Racing is the new Basic Training.

Perhaps it should be suggested that all of the support or special interest group threads should be started in the Run and Race Reports forum.

Running never becomes truly easy, it's always an effort. But it will certainly become easier as you run more. Don't worry about hills or speed or anything like that. Just run, and run some more, and run some more...

Don't consider adding any speed work until you can comfortably run at least 15-20 miles a week. At that point you'll have the necessary endurance and physical toughness to benefit from it and be less apt to end up injured. Speed work is hard on your bod.

If you read through these forums, you'll gain a lot of understanding about running. The consensus seems to be to slow down to a comfortable, enjoyable pace and just keep adding distance till you hit 20-25 Miles per week. At that point you can add a couple of miles of tempo (a pace where you are working a bit, but not running all out). And if at that point you feel like entering a race, run some interval sessions like 4X400 to 8X400 (for a 5K to 10K longer intervals for longer races) at your goal pace about once a week for 4 weeks prior to the race.

My race speed (if you can call 9 min/miles speed) is 2-3 min/mile faster than my training pace. So don't sweat how slow your training runs are.

Running never really gets easier, the faster you get the faster you want to go. That is the addiction part of running.

Congratulations, 30 mins is a big milestone. I remember when I started running my goal was to get up to 30 mins without walking. After that I considered myself a runner.

Don't worry about pace, just run.
