IPODS a dangerous distraction from running

I have never understood people who listen to music when they run..why not bring along a mini tv as well?
Are you out to run, or listen to music? Which is it? It can't be both...
People with ipods are as annoying and oblivious as people who walk around on their cellphones..

I've had a runner wearing an Ipod into run into me, and i was standing still...

If you have a scenic running route, that should be sufficient entertainment...

I have seen runners with ipods nearlly get clipped by cars becuase they were oblivious-
I just think IPODS are a total distraction noit just from running, but from ones surroundings...
If a runner craves music, they can sing to themself..

It drives me nuts when someone makes a comment like "I can't run without music" I just think wow, you really don't enjoy the pure - simple - joy of running. And then the one's that say "what am I going to do, I can't listen to music during my race" I can't comprehend this kind of obsession with music and running.

But boy, this thread is going to cause a stir, LOL.

Well, I guess you are going to have to resign yourself to the fact that not everyone thinks like you do.

I do a couple of runs a week with my MP3 and believe me, I for one, CAN run and listen to music at the same time. I sometimes do speedwork with my MP3. I've never been hit by a car nor have I run into anyone.

Listening to music or not, you have to be aware of your surroundings.

This looks to be a bit of a controversial subject on these boards, but as long as people are following road rules and using running etiquette (I'm not saying they all do) I don't have a problem with it. I listen to podcasts on mine as well as music, books, etc...it helps me disassociate from every creak and groan of my body while I run. I don't think they should be allowed in races. It is hazardous in that situation, when focus and safety are issues.

Get over yourself. Of course it can be both. Your logic sinks like your moniker.

You had a runner run into? Dear god the humanity. How did you ever survive. No wonder you carry such a burden and are so angry.

should be sufficient. Boy it's a good thing you're hear to explain to the rest of us how things should be.

Actually, there have only been two recorded fatalities when someone had an ipod. One was a cyclist, the other a rollerbladder. Care to know how many there have been without?

Sing to myself? My voice is so scary I don't want it in my head. And I certainly don't want to repeat the same verse over and over and over again on a three hour run.

Music is something that's meant to be enjoyed...just like running. Who the heck are you to blather on about how ppl should do either.

...grow up.

What do you care? It most certainly can be both. Do you careen off a cliff in your car every time you turn on the radio?

What does this have to do with you? What business is it of yours? Perhaps you shouldn't worry yourself with how others comport themselves.

What was the setting? Was it during a race? If so, what were you doing standing still on the course? If you're going to tell us that the runner ran off the course then that would more credibly be a problem with vision, not hearing. Or was it in a pre-race crowd? If so, this has nothing to do with running while listening to music. Vision governs far more of our spatial awareness than hearing.

Says who? You? Who the **** are you to be dictating the tastes of others and how they spend their time?

This, again, has very little to do with hearing and more with vision. If you're running against traffic, as is safest, then your vision should give you plenty of warning of oncoming traffic.

People like you are nuts. You have no intervening compunction stopping you from saying that because you think it's a good idea, everyone must be forced to do it. You go straight from your own impression to the conclusion that, because it makes sense to you, everyone must be compelled to comply. A number of individuals with similar psychological profiles have tragically risen to positions of power over the years. History books know them as tyrants.

I only wear headphones while pushing my baby in a stroller during a race, cuz that baby sure can cry long and loud! The headphones help drown it out for me cuz I don't want to be listening to that racket for a whole race!

Wow, that was a truly hostile response!
Look, I live in the city, and have seen many instances where IPOD users and cellphone users are so distracted they put themselves and others at danger...Just today a woman driving next to me was on her cellphone and was nearlly rear ended the car in front of her.
FYI, you might want to refrain from personal attacks when you respond to a threat, you come accross as very unfriendly..Cute Freudian projection, accusing me of being the angry one...I take it you are an IPOD user, and took my thread as a personal attack- Boo hoo.
have a nice day..

It's not hostility; it's called sarcasm.

ipod user? sure on occasion. not in races. big deal.

if I had a penny for everytime I saw something that was almost an accident I'd be riding a carbon fiber bike.

personal attacks? you're too sensitive. I didn't make any, other than "grow up," which I stand by. I think your parents are calling...they said you need to get off the cpu and take out the trash.

You're grouping an entire category of ppl together based on a few negative personal experiences. That's been done before in history with disastrous consequences, far worse than your moniker.

Again, no one cares if you understand. The fact that you don't explains it and you very clearly.
