Thyroid issues (hypo preferred)

Anyone have any stories or insites into hypothyroidism? I'm going to visit the doc on Monday to test for this condition, and it has me wondering if other runners have had the problem and what the results have been like after going on medication or doing whatever.

Thanks much!

In August I had half of mine removed...There was tumor on it. I didn't think of the whole procedure as a big deal....I was really concerned how it would affect my running. Actually, after 2 weeks of rest, I was back out running. Didn't notice any difference and I don't take any pills.

Make sure they test for antibodies as well. Sometimes you can have normal test results for your hormone levels, but if you test positively for the antibodies that means something's up. If you are using a GP I would make sure they include it on your panel. If you are seeing an endocrinologist, they probably will. If you are being tested for hypothyroid, are you symptomatic? Fatigue, weight gain or loss, dry skin, pale complexion, mental fuzziness, low libido are some examples. If there is a problem, you will probably be put on a trial of synthroid which should help you feel better. Depending on what level of running you do, it should only help and if it doesn't they will play with the levels until it does. Natural alternative to synthetic thyroid hormone is dessicated pig thyroid, Armour brand...some people have had better results going back to normal levels with that.

I have Hypothyroid. Diagnosed in August of this year. Mine was due to radiation for cancer treatment(not thyroid). I am on levothyroxin and feel great. My running has only gotten better. I still feel fatiqued at times and have difficulty with cold temperatures. But I notice no difference in Running! Good Luck Stephanie

I have hypothyroid-- and have had it for ten years. It took a while to get my dosage where it needed to be, and I see the doc 2-3 times a year just to make sure things stay where they need to be, but I have had no trouble with running.

My normal test results were fine but my antibodies were 800% above where they should have been.

Also have it. January will be my 3 year anniversary of being on meds. I was very resistant about going on meds bcz I guess I was in denial about the whole thing (that attitude of mine actually delayed me getting a proper diagnosis for about 18 months...long story but I was not a good advocate for myself during this time. )

The meds are great. They made me feel sooo much better. My running did improve but really only bcz I was sooooo tired all the time that one run would wipe me out for an entire week, I am talking about only a 3 mile run there. Good luck.

Been Hypothyroid for 10 years too. Super high andtibodies are a sign of Hashimotos Hypothyroidism. And don't beleive for a second that a GP know much about the disorder. You should be seeing an endocrinologist for sure. The "range" for normal is also a bunch of BS. I'm comfortable only once my TSH gets down around .5, it's different for everyone. I got a lot faster once I came out of my brain fog I was in for a few years while undiagnosed. The depression, sleeping 18 hours a day and constipation all went away. You will need to go in for regular blood tests every 90 days until you nail down the dosage you need to be on. Good luck.
