Traffic stuck in Marathon

As I run marathon thru cross road intersection, I saw many cars waiting at some crossroads. Would these drivers really
have to wait 1 or 2 hours watching Marathon race?

Should the city police do a better job directing traffic away
one or two blocks away rather than let these cars come right
to the marathon course?

Hope some of those poor drivers get inspired by watching and
become marathion runner themselves

Re: Traffic stuck in Marathon
I'm curious about this. I've never been stopped as a runner in a race to let cars through but they can't possibly make drivers sit for the duration of a race before they'll let them cross, can they?

I once saw a driver in a car held up by a cop at a green light during a 10k I was running go ballistic and start screaming profanities out his window at the cop. It was at about the halfway mark so it was less than 25 minutes into the race. To be honest I'd have been ****** off too if I had to be somewhere and ended up stuck. I don't think it was a big enough race (a few hundred runners) that the streets would have been posted ahead of time as I've seen in a some large (thousands of runners) races.

Re: Traffic stuck in Marathon
In most local races I've seen, there's either a short wait for cars or ample warning not to go down certain streets. Drivers who end up waiting a long time can usually blame only themselves as they ignore signs.

Once in a 10K I actually saw a car slowly weave its way between two police cruisers blocking the road with lights flashing, drive up behind the cops and the runners grouped at the starting line, and start blaring on the horn trying to get through! (I'm pretty sure he got ticketed for that one)

For major races they usually publicize closures well ahead of time.

Re: Traffic stuck in Marathon
I was originally scheduled to work as a course monitor (i.e. traffic director) at our new local marathon (I wound up for various reasons working the post-race food tent instead), and so I went to the pre-race briefing provided by the local police department. Here's a random sampling of what we were told.

- We civilians would be covering the 4-way stop sign interesections, the 'tee' intersections, and the like. The police would be manning any intersection where they would actually have to be directing traffic (i.e. any with stop-lights). That way we wouldn't need to get any extra training.

- Do not do something - or allow something to happen - that will break the runner's stride.

- Some of the most vociferous complainers you'll see will be the families going to church. Try to work with them, but only if you can do so safely.

- If there is a sufficient break in the runners you can let one or two cars through the intersection, but make sure the break is big enough. The drivers will probably take longer to get through than you expect ('you mean me?').

- The runners will be told that there will be traffic on parts of the course so they need to be aware of their surroundings.

COlumbus Half Marathon, April '05. At about m11, a cop friggin' STOPPED the race to allow traffic to cross. No real break in runners, cop just stopped runners to allow cars to pass.

I ran the National Marathon in DC the first year. The part where it went through Prince Georges county had traffic backed up for miles. I really thought one of the runners was going to get shot in anger.

I have been traffic sergeant in medium size city for 19 years we have several races the largest being the Peace Race a 10K with about 1,000 runners. An Hungarian church is located on a corner where we have a turn, the road is closed but if the people approach the Officer tell them they are going to the church we let them from one direction only. Most are very polite but some would be very upset. The church pastor once told me that they all were going **** for running on Sunday morning. The next year an elite woman runner from Hungary ran the race and the all church folk had a big party in front waiting for her to pass (it's at 5.3 miles). That was about 10-12 years ago I can't think of her name. She did win.

4boys - OMG!!! And that was during the infamous Half Marathon Blizzard, when all we wanted to do was FINISH the d*mn race and find a blanket in the med tent.

You were probably shivering too much to get his badge number...

Re: Traffic stuck in Marathon
Even if you are the most organized race crew and the most organized police department, you can not possible put out enough signs in enough places so that all drivers will see the signs.

How can you possiblly put signs on every road at all portions of all streets so that people who live INSIDE a closed off grid of city blocks will know that the road in front of their house is closed.

Where do you put the sign so that I will see it as I leave my house when I turn right or left out of my driveway.

If I leave my house and turn down toward where runners are and I'm not really informed about the place, time or even the existance of the a race, would I not be upset at seeing a road I can't get across or onto.

Re: Traffic stuck in Marathon
I've seen both sides. As a runner, I've experienced traffic trying to cut across the course. At this years RnR in San Diego, some dim bulb and her kid were riding thier bikes against the course direction. Almost caused a flipping disaster. Didn't she notice 18,000 peoples faces heading her direction??? But hey, she was in the bike lane, so it's alright, right?

As a former Sheriff Deputy I have directed traffic at many an event- bikes, running, walking, etc. At first I thought drivers were absolutely oblivious to what was going on at the event. Quickly I learned they realized, and felt all righteous about crossing the path, etc. They saw the runners/bikers/traffic cop. They just want to prove a point while sitting inside 2500 pounds of protection. I have been cussed at more than I care to remember by these lunkheads. They know a cop on foot can't run after them. What they don't know is they can't out run a Motorola though. Sometimes it works.

I always hope that they get a judge that is a runner or cyclist.

This happened to me in a marathon. It was a small race and I was about 30 feet behind a group in front of me and there was nobody behind me as far as the eye could see and only two cars waiting. Anyway, my finish time was 4:00:03 and that was on the long list of things I went over where I could have picked up 4 seconds
