You think it's a dumb question but...

It's snot. -Sorry this is gross

I just went running in about 30 degree temp with about 15 mph wind gusts and as usual my nose was a river. I tilt my head forward and it literally runs out. How much is normal? Do I have a sensitive nose. Is there anything I can do to prevent it? It's hard to breathe and the constant blowing and wiping is irritating it.

Thanks
Chris

I bought 6 pairs of gloves for $3. They double as a snot rag.

I also use the cheap gloves. I throw a pair in the laundry basket after every run, just like dirty socks.
... and you could search "snot rocket." The gloves are just for wiping up after.

Re: You think it's a dumb question but...
heh You beat me to it! I have the same problem. I was just thinking about posting this topic earlier today b/c running against the wind for the past several days has turned my nose into a major leaky faucet!

I battle with this every winter and have yet to find an effective solution. Usually, I just use my nose as a gauge for keeping my head up (i.e., align my posture so that I'm not hunched forward, and looking ahead and not down) to minimize leakage and also use my running gloves. I may just start bringing some tissue w/ me (storing it in my pockets)... sigh

I'll try the saline wash to see if it helps and post back...

edit When it gets super cold/windy and my nose gets raw, I use a q-tip to dab some neosporin inside my nose and around the rims and that seems to make my nose less leaky/feel better...[/edit]

Snot rockets are free and you don't need to wash them.

i can't figure out the snot rocket - it normally leads me to spittle like things...

anyway, I normally use the bottom of my shirt or if I remember a dish rag!

it does get annoying but i have to say that I have not had a sinus infection yet since i started running in June so i guess that makes it all ok!

Viva paper towels are awesome. They are strong and soft and very absorbent. Way better than tissues. Stick one in your pocket or your waistband and it will get you through even a long run. It's the only brand I buy now.

I use bandana. In the summer, they sop up sweat. In the winter, snot. I just tuck it in my waist band.

However, if it's not too bad, I just let it run. I wipe my nose before going inside. If it's really bad and thick enough, snot rockets.
