Backwards on elliptical?

I have noticed a couple of recent posts describing using the elliptical machine "backwards", and do not know the reason/benefit for this.

Would I be right in guessing the reason for this would be to work the opposing muscle groups?
Thanks, Simon.

I just spent 3 weeks on the elliptical recovering from an injury. I only went forward, because, well, it felt more like running. So I just started back running and I noticed my hamstrings are killing me while my quads are fine. I'm wondering if maybe I should have gone backwards some!

I go backwards sometimes. I think it's a lot harder (or maybe just different enough that it seems that way). Either way, it breaks up the rhythm and boredom that I often get on the elliptical. I'd much rather be running, but I know xt is very important - especially since I"m coming back from an injury. Try it out.
