Winter running is great!!!

I usually procrastinate a bit more before I am out there, but after 3-4 min., it's quite nice. I am glad I invested in quality clothes (they last for decades!), and I feel stronger than anyone else for being out there on the roads and happy that I do not let myself get out of shape during the cold months. And nothing is more pleasant than to come home to a nice, warm living room and to have a bowl of hot cereal for recovery.
Beats running in hot, humid weather by far!

Yes, I love winter running, too! Nuthin' like being in the "more miles than degrees" club. I do not do well in the heat.

"More miles than degrees" - I like that. Haven't quite hit that this year as it's still in the 20s for the most part and marathon training doesn't start for 6 weeks.

Yesterday's run was awesome. Low 20s, 1/2 inch of snow on the ground and still falling, no wind.

The benefits are great, too. We're gonna be so much ahead of those that slack in the winter.

Also, one of the cool things about running in harsh weather (any harsh weather) is it gives you that "I'm a hardcore athlete" feel. Last year I did some running in single digit temps and I felt very studly indeed.

Check out the Dreadmill Challenge in basic training, though if it just gets too nasty outside.

Already have 3 or 4 of those runs in ... it's been a cold and snowy early winter up here in MN. Other than a full load of running clothes everyday, running in the snow beats the hot and humid days of August hands down!

It is the most wonderful time of the year...to run.

My favorite winter day long run scenario:
partially sunny, 20F, just enough clouds to make some light snow and no wind...I love sun AND snow...it is a great combo for a great, happy run.

I ve always hated running in the cold but I ve forced myself to this year because I can't take the treadmill anymore. It hasn't been as bad as I thought with the exception of my nose.

I ran yesterday in a light snow and I d have to say it was really nice. Very relaxing seeing a gentle snow fall while running. I had a guy yell to me "That's dedication" lol. I got a big kick out of that.

The last four/five weeks my weekly mileage has drastically dropped due to the frequent rain/snow we've had here in NJ.

I dont mind much running in weather down to 20, below that I just dont do it. I did all that stuff in the early 70s while in HS and college, when I'd think nothing of being out in shorts and sweatshirt in 7 degree weather. LOL

I did a nice 10 mile run last Saturday and the temps were in the low 30s and breezy all day. Gonna try a four miler tonight. Here in NJ/NYC its in the high 20s low 30s...

Last winter was pretty bad here and we got lots of snow, was too dangerous to get out. Thinking of getting an exercise bike to tide me over this winter.

If you're not too uptight, in the winter you can get 2, sometimes 3 workouts out of your clothes before you wash them.

The problem with "more miles than degrees" is that as soon as it drops below 0 you win merely by staying inside And if you switch to Celsius....

This will be my first year doing any serious winter running. I've picked up some warm tights and mittens. Amazing how much the right equipment can make a difference. The thing i like the most about winter running is how much the scenery changes when covered in white. The slipping and sliding is fun too.

It gets easier with practice. My wearing shorts threshold has dropped from 35 to 20 degrees

You people are insane. I started running last January, but I lived in Tampa then. I moved up here to Toronto in August and thought it was great. People up here were complaining about the heat but it was cooler here in August than it was in Tampa in May I was doing mid-day runs with no problem when everyone else was pushing their runs to either early mornings or late at night to stay cool. Ah, but now the worm has turned. It's freakin' cold up here. Seriously cold. And no one scrapes the sidewalks even on the major streets. I was running on some park system trails up here in October and the beginning of November but quit when the snow stayed because a few people on here had said that they become unusable with the ice and snow. Guess what? I'm running on them again because they are in no worse shape than the sidewalks! I think I'll survive the cold once I figure out what to wear. I have some nice cold weather running gear but I haven't managed to find the right combination yet. I'm always either too hot or too cold. I'll survive winter running, but I will always miss running in Tampa in late June when it's 85 degrees at dusk and there's just this little hint of a gulf breeze. I try to think of that now as blow my nose while I run over uneven ice pack with a freezing wind in my face and try to remember to keep shaking my bottle of Gatorade so it doesn't freeze solid. Yeah, this is the sweet life.

In general, I am not a lover of winter running. However, I just got back from a short run in a very light snowfall, and it was wonderful!

I have had a problem with cold induced asthma the last couple of years, but only with cold dry air so running at 31 degrees but with moist snow in the air was no problem at all and I could take in deep breaths of fresh air with no coughing, no tightness at all. You don't appreciate it until you haven't been able to, how good it is to be able to breathe in deeply with no problems.

I took the day off, so I could run in the daylight around our park, and unlike the sidewalks, the road through the park ahd been plowed very well with no ice patches, just dry surface with a very light coating of fresh snow and mine were the very first footprints. Beautiful!
