Quad strengthening exercises for runners?

Sorry if I'm re-hashing an old topic, but can you recommend quad exercises that are effective and don't require membership in a gym or purchase of expensive gear? Thank you from a 47-yr-old 1st time marry-thoner.

for running:
stairs,
hills,
and snowshoe running.

also lunges and squats for plain old strengthening.

box jumps, standing leaps, standing hops, skipping for height or distance - good plyometric exercises to develop power and encourage or increase flexibility.

ditto what obsessor said. If you do one-legged balance squats, you also strengthen the balance muscles more. I may throw some weight in a backpack for additional weight or use some hand weights.

Ditto the above. My favorites are walking lunges and one leg squats.

Re: Quad strengthening exercises for runners?
I agree that hill running is the best quad exercise for runners. At home, there's one I call the Wall Squat. It hits the lower quad around the knee, where runners need strength for alignment. Remember the wall sit kids used to do in gym class? It's similar to that. Stand about 18" from a wall with your feet 6" apart. With back against the wall, slide down until quads are parallel with floor, then slide back up. Your upper back and lower back should remain in contact with the wall at all times. You can do it anywhere, and it's easy to knock out a couple sets any time you want.

Thanks everyone. Do any of you use dumbells for the one-legged squats?<HR>

Sure you can use dumbbells. I use light ones but generally most people have a hard time doing a few reps of one leg squats so many will just use bodyweight. But if you get up to 15 reps in great form (with full range of motion), sure add some light dumbbells.
