I vacation every summer in Eastham, which is the next town down the road. There are TONS of good places to run, as long as you avoid the mid-Cape Highway.

Get yourself a map of the Cape Cod Rail Trail (or just ask a local)...

It's a total of 22 miles, so just start out from Orleans in either direction and do and out-and-back. You'll run into lots of families on bikes, but if you run early, you won't see many people at all.

I love just running the back roads in Eastham.

When it's low tide, run on the bay beaches. You can go for miles.

If you're planning on vacationing on the Cape in October, you may want to look into renting a cottage (house)...typically these rentals run from Saturday through Saturday, but October will be the off-season and you may be able to find something. Check into local real estate companies (maybe check the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce or tourism bureau); most Cape realtors handle vacation rentals as well as sales. Good luck! It's a great time to be on the Cape. Look further out than Falmouth as well -- everything is pretty close by on the Cape and the smaller towns are great.
