It's not Utopia, but it is a better work environment than some other companies, judging by the comments of my contemporaries. It's located in Baltimore.

Why do you sound so bitter?

I'm not. Just messing with you.

I have a pretty good gig too. Coming to work on Friday's in only a thong is pretty liberating.

I always kick myself when I make myself "available" when I am taking time off, but it's kind of expected. Not to mention the fact that in some weird way if something goes wrong and I'm not there I still seem to get blamed for it. Yeah, I know I sound like that new commercial for Kinko's (?) -- everybody IS out to get me!

Truthfully I don't mind having to answer a couple of e-mails or calls or whatever when I'm off, but I was pretty ticked when I got a call when I was on funeral leave when my dad passed away. I always wondered if there was a line drawn where they would say "we can't call him now no matter what", and I guess it turns out there isn't one. It's just funny how times have changed because when I was in high school my dad was a VP with one of the largest consumer finance companies in the country, and I can never recall him ever being called at home or during vacations.

I have a running gag on my DH. I have pics of him on his blackberry in most of our vacation portfolio, including the middle of the Cinque Terre as well as DisneyWorld.

I am just happy to be on vacation with him.
shrug

and depending on just how many calls he does take depends on whether he calls it a vacation day.

Oh Lintu, I totally hear you. It's annoying, but at least it's just a conference call and you don't have to go into the office or anything. It's tough to maintain those boundaries. It really is.

FWIW, I just had a major disagreement with this project manager on Friday. I was supposed to be on vacation next week, but now I'm not. Someone decided that Tuesday would be a great day to have a kickoff meeting with all the team members from both sides... in Ann Arbor. So we leave on Monday and get back late Tuesday night.

So I point out that we don't really have time to create a bunch of mockups and design for them for this Tuesday meeting and honest to god, he says, "well, you can just do it over the weekend. Easy. Do it on the weekend and on the plane Monday, and we'll show them stuff on Tuesday. I told them we would have some mockups."

Um, no. I postponed my vacation because of these projects, and I'm not working this weekend. Sorry. When I pointed out that his request was unreasonable, he countered with "well, I'm going to be working this weekend."

I didn't back down. I do work some weekends when it is necessary, like when a project is launching and we are in final QA and bug fixing stage, but before a kickoff meeting, during a holiday week, when no one from either side really wanted to have until the following week? I don't think so. That is completely unreasonable, especially when you promise a client that I'm essentially going to be working all weekend without asking me.
