Re: Philadelphia area runners -- Main Line, specifically
Hey locals! I don't run any of these trails, I mainly stay in my neighborhood (Penn Wynne section of Lower Merion) since i run early in the a.m. I used to run on Kelly Drive, maybe I'll go back there again soon.

Alexis A - Just wondering if you ever got your answer on the Haverford College trail distance. I live right up the street and would love to run it but I hate not knowing my distance.

Re: Philadelphia area runners -- Main Line, specifically
I used to run the loop at haverford and think it's a bit under 3 miles, probably close to 2.5. The folks at Bryn Mawr running store probably know as someone there hipped me to the trail.
As for the Betzwood trail are you guys talking about the mountain bike trails? If so does anyone have a distance for them?

Re: Philadelphia area runners -- Main Line, specifically
If you haven't been to Betzwood in a few years you won't recognize it. The old cinder path along the river is about 3 miles from the parking lot to Paulings Rd. It is still there.

The paved Schuylkill River trail which used to start at Betzwood and run south to Manayunk now continues north as well. About 3 miles north it goes through Lower Perkiomen Park in Oaks where it becomes the Perkiomen trail. After Oaks it is cinder to Green Lane. Both the Schuykill and Perkiomen are marked every 1/2 mile.

Eventually, the Schuylkill Trail itself will continue West to Reading.

Also from Betzwood you can cross the river to connect to the Main Valley Forge Park loop - and the verdant hills beyond.

Pardon my pride in saying that we are so lucky to have this network of paths in our backyard. Miles and Miles of running and biking without a car to worry about.

Take Care,
Paoli Mike

Hey, anyone doing the Penn Wynne 5k next Saturday, Oct. 8? Starts in front of the Penn Wynne Library on Overbrook Parkway (just off Haverford Rd) in Wynnewood. Benefits the library. It's a fun little race...very hilly. I ran it last year, so if you have any questions let me know. Here is the link:

Re: Philadelphia area runners -- Main Line, specifically
Hey everyone

I just registered for the Ben Franklin Bridge 10K and the Philly Marathon 8K (I'll be running the 8K, thank you!)

Have any of you run these before? Any advice? Unless I decide to go for a last-minute 5K before then, these will be my first races.

Hey Paoli Mike -

How do you get to Betzwood? Sounds like some nice trails.
I work in Paoli. Live in West Chester. Usually run the neighborhood roads or, on weekends, go out to the Struble Trail in Downingtown. Would love to find some new places to run, not too far away.

Jane

Re: Philadelphia area runners -- Main Line, specifically
Betzwood is off of 422 at the Trooper Rd exit (first exit after river). Stay left as you exit and take a left, you are crossing over 422. Stay left and head down slight decline, then right into parking area. You will see boat launch to left and parking to right continue straight and there are bathrooms w/ 3-4 parking spaces. More parking on left past restrooms. the entrance for the trail is at the end of that road. you will see a gate and sign with a map. The gravel trail parallels the river, But the fun stuff is between the gravel trail and the multi use trail. It is mtn bike and equestrian type single track. The trailhead is about 1/2 mile down the gravel trail on right. It's a gravel trail heading up and it's a backward "S" at the top you'll see the begining of the dirt trail. Enjoy.
If you aren't comfortable going alone, I live in Paoli also and would be up for company on the trail.

Thanks for the information mrfunnyjokes, I will have to give it a try. I work in Paoli, live in West Chester. When I run during the week I have limited time. Do you ever go over to Betzwood on the weekend?

I do run at Betzwood on the weekend. And it seems from number of posts regarding trail type runs that at least a few people in the area would be interested in running at Betzwood as well. I have set my preferences so that you can email me. Perhaps we can get a group run together.

Re: Philadelphia area runners -- Main Line, specifically
I usually run from Betzwood on the weekends. In addition to the standard directions from Rt 422, you can also get there from the Paoli side of the Schuylkill. From Paoli, take 252 North until it ends at Rt 23. Right on Rt 23 and left at the bottom of the hill. Park at the dead end and walk across the boardwalk bridge along 422.

Since a few people have expressed interest in these routes, everyone should also know that there is a 5 mile loop in the main section of Valley Forge Park and there are trails (hills, rocks) on Mt Misery and Mt Joy both of which are accessible from VF park. From the top of Mt Misery you can even catch the Horseshoe Trail which eventually ends in Hershey!

I can give more details on any of these.

The Valley Forge Striders run from Betzwood on Saturdays at 8am and from the Main VF Park on Sundays at 8am. I've never run with them but its on their website.

If you get a run together let me know, I'll try to make it.

---

On a tangent, I read about a fun way to run with a group of diverse speeds in Runners World. You pick a time-length of run and set off on an out-and-back course (the Schuykill trail is a good choice.) Everyone takes off at the same time and runs whatever pace they want. At the halfway (time) point, everyone turns around and races back to the start now the it is a handicapped race to the finish where you have to run a negative split in the second half to catch a slower runner or stay ahead of a faster one. My wife and I do this together and its a lot of fun.

Take Care,
Paoli Mike

I did the 8K in '02. Flat, run entirely on Kelly.

Do not run Forbidden Drive alone.

I occasionally go downtown and run the Schuylkill loop. Most days, I just run on the city streets in NE Philly, my neck o' the woods.

Bump this to the top. The Penn Wynne 5k is tomorrow. The forecast doesn't look good but it's rain or shine so I will be out there. Hope some of you can make it.

Hey Clams, how was it? It was a little misty out here in D'town, ha ha. After a mile I was squishing and at the end of five it was like running in contractor's boots.

I'm heading out to Struble Trail to see whether or not it's underwater.

Hey, I love Betzwood too. I do the 6 mile loop of trails. The striders look too fast for me, I see them at the park when I do VF runs for my shorter runs.
