Running in Amsterdam

Hello!
I will be traveling to Amsterdam ( my first trip out of the country) from Sept. 12th- Sept. 19th. I'd love to find a running group to hook up with so I can continue my marathon training. If not, can someone tell me safe places to run while I'm there? We're staying close to the airport, if that makes any difference, but I don't mind traveling to various locations. I need to run 20 miles while I'm there, if I can.

You are going to enjoy Amsterdam while you are there. I was just there this summer. Amsterdam itself is a little busier, but most of the cities over there have dedicated areas of walking and running right along the street. Definately a lot more bicycles and pedestrians then there are cars in the Holland area. Just get outside of Amsterdam itself and you should have ample areas to run. We stayed in Rotterdam, very nice place with plenty of places to run. Enjoy!

Kimmie,
I travel to Amsterdam several times a year and I usually try to get at least one run in. In general, The Netherlands are very runner friendly because it is VERY bike friendly. The bike roads are separate from the normal roads and usually parallel. Look for small road signs on the bike roads that give you distances and directions to the next town. Using these you can easily run a route without a map.

I usually stay outside A'dam so most of my routes are outside the city. There is a large park called the Amsterdamse Bos that is riddled with paths for hiking/running. I had a good time just choosing a direction and running in there - got pretty lost as a result! The Bos is very close to the airport and can be accessed from the road that connects the Airport to the suburb of Amstelveen. You will know you are in the right area when you see a well-known McDonalds that sits right next to a runway at Schipol.

I often run on a new jogging path that runs along the Amstel river. Both sides of the Amstel have good roads or paths for running. You can run up one side and down the other and there is no way to get lost!

Have a good trip.
