well, how did anybody do at the badgerland striders half marathon?
I was going to run it because I had a great time last year, but a friend came back to Madison from Washington DC so I had to play basketball with him instead.
I exercise lots but this was the first basketball in about a year for me, I played pretty well but I am so unbelievably sore now!
How did the weekend go for the rest of you?

Hey Wisconsinites!
Just wondering who has ran in the Crazylegs in Madison? My fiance and I are newbie's and have only been running for about a month now...we're slow and overweight but can plug along for about 3 miles without being run ragged. We ran our first 5K race after 4 weeks of training in just under 33 minutes. Would we be stupid to attempt the Crazylegs? I heard it's a great time but also don't want to be "unprepared" and try to finish it? Advice? Suggestions?

Never done crazylegs so no advice from me.

I was out for a 5 mile walk with my SIL and when we finished I had decided that I had had enough of fighting the wind and so I went to the gym and used the TM to get a 4 mile run in. I am hoping that the wind dies down before this weekend.

Hi all....I am in the Madison area (Cottage Grove). I am looking for a good 20 mile route - does anyone have any suggestions?

I heard the Military Ridge bike path has mile markers, but I have never been on it....I appreciate any ideas....

Crazylegs is probably a great one for you. There are a lot of spectators and runners, so if you need the extra boost to keep going, you will have it. They are also doing a wave start this year there isn't so much congestion for the first mile (which was a nightmare last year - I didn't get into a good stride until I was near the end of State Street!).

It is a fun one - go for it!

I was at Southshore - Striders 1/2. Another quality event even if Ma nature was not at her best.

It had rained a lot the night before and you had a few water hazards and muddy shoes until you got to one spot were you had not choice but to run through some pretty deep water.

Temp was 35F winds 10-12 MPH behind you on the way out and in your face on way back.

All and all the striders always do a nice job and I plan to go again next year. It is always a nice low cost event.

Hey there, I live in Reedsburg (Wisconsin Dells area) and I could really use a running partner!

I used to live in Green Bay, but all my running friends are there, alas. I have a 2-year-old daughter, and I did run throughout my pregnancy, but it's still been an uphill climb since then to reach my pre-pregnancy shape. (And furthermore, to find the time to get those longer runs in!)

I'm currently training for the Run for the Butter 10K here in Reedsburg in mid-June. I haven't done a 10K since the Bellin Run in 2002! I did complete the Jingle Bell 5k in Madison in 2004, but no races since then due to a nagging knee injury. The knee is finally cooperating with me once again, so I look forward to getting back into the swing of things!

I ran 3.2 today, and I hadn't run that far in a few years (sadly.) It felt good, and I did feel like I could have gone a bit further, but then it started pouring like mad.

I'd really like to do a marathon someday . . .

GaelicTempest - It is not so much where you have been or even where you are currently at, but where are you going?

Sounds like you are going forward and going to get better than you are right now.

I live in Neenah and we are like Green bay - Enough people around to train with and enough races to keep you interested.

The marathon is a good goal - Start with the 10K and then 1/2 Marathon and then the Marathon. What you will find is that by the time you can run a marathon you will be in better shape than you have been before for all distances.

Enjoy the journey - Pay attention to speed bumps (Busy life, injuries or just bad days) and stay away from the people that do not support your goals (They try to suck the life out of your running).

Although I am not Irish - I am married to someone that is part Irish and have 2 girls - Erin and Katie - Which makes me Irish by association.

Have you tried using www.gmap-pedometer.com[/URL" target="_blank"> to create routes? You can start from any point and make your own route.

I ran on the city path by the coliseum and someone told me it eventually connected with Military Ridge. I don't remember mile markers. I can't imagine military ridge being very exciting on foot. The main thing I remember from biking it many years ago is that going from Madison towards Mt Horeb was uphill and the way back was fast. I'd prefer the ups and downs of the arboreteum and the circular path would lead you past your vehicle a few times for fuel/water. But as Madison has grown quite a bit since I left in '96, I don't know how the traffic plays in around the zoo/hospital/Edgewood anymore.

Hi- I live in Marshfield, fairly new to running, my first event is the half marathon in Cincinnati on May 7. Thinking towards doing another half in the fall- considering Fox Cities- any thoughts? I drive through Appleton on the highway quite often, but not familiar with the course- any input appreciated.

I live in Marshfield 10-13 years ago - Didn't run back then.

I live in Neenah now. The fox cities website has a elevation chart for marathon. There is elevation change, but nothin bad. I would be a good marathon or 1/2 marathon - Close enough to home and well run. I will most likely run the marathon this year.

Only other suggestion if you wanted to wait a few weeks would be Whistle Stop in Ashland.

Either way - you won't be disappointed - Welcome to the board

If you want to know more specifics on the Fox Cities course and general marathon info - ask away as I know some posters here have run it multiple times.

Hey how is everyone doing now that spring seems to be here?

Training for G-ma's hit a rough patch last week but I have hopefully gotten over it and back on track. I think the next long run will be a lot of mental games considering last week.

Depending on how it goes I am looking for races after the marathon because I have read that you should already have a race in mind for afterward to help with the post marathon blues. Trying to decide if I want to do the Hayward Half marathon again or if I should go for Whistle Stop Half (I think there's a half). Oh the choices!!

Runninlaw-

The nicest 20 mile run I know of in the Madison area is around Lake Monona (about 11.1), plus the arboretum (6.2). The extra miles come from jogging around Monona Bay to get to the arboretum and back again. The whole run comes out to just under 20 miles.
