Areas to avoid in DC

I moved to Capitol Hill, and so far, I've just been running around the Capitol/West Potomac Park area for my runs. As my long runs get longer... are there areas downtown I should NOT run... or are runners not usually crime targets? I'm not a fan of doing laps, so if I can map out a safe route that's long, I'm all for it

Thanks!

The Mall. Way too many tourists. Other than that, you're good.

The previous poster is messing with you. Not very nice.

I'm not a local, but I know that if there's one rule you absolutely must remember, it's this: don't cross the Anacostia River.

Safe routes for long runs: check out the C&O Canal towpath and the Capital Crescent Trail.

Good luck, enjoy. It's one of the greatest running communites in the country. Hook up with a club.

you'll probably want to stay away from any areas in SE DC, espeically Anacostia. There are parts of NE that aren't much better. Running between the Capitol and Union Station and then up Maryland isn't too bad. If you head North on Capitol Street, it gets worse by the block. Anyways, you probably want to stick with the mall for the time being.

In response to earlier posts...

Considering all of Capitol Hill is in NE or SE, avoiding NE and SE is pretty bad advice. Anacostia is a predominantly African-American community which does not mean its unsafe, as the previous poster suggests, although it's probably not a convenient place for you to run.

Running along the mall is a great advantage to living on the Hill. If you looking to do more distance, you can continue along the river to Rock Creek Park around the Kennedy Center or hook up with the C&O canal towpath in Foggy Bottom/G'town.
