<HR>

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Chops, but the formal marathon preparation fell out the window sometime during the first week of October. A freak weight training injury, a nasty case of the flu, a week and change dedicated to finding and moving into a more permanent dwelling, and many special events at work have all made it so my training has been very shaky, and a reasonable individual would have pulled out of the race at this point. It has been difficult to find time for more than hour-long runs, and the pressure of "putting in the long-run" has had me pushing back runs another day and another day and another day... and the weeks pass with very few runs happening...

As things stand, with 16 days to go, I haven't gone above 16 miles yet... As I said, a more reasonable individual would have pulled out already. I still give myself 9 days to build up a bit of extra mileage on top of that. I'm not in such bad shape, but with some weeks where I ran just once for an hour or so, and no weeks above 45 km since my last MTL run with Ralf, I am woefully undertrained for this event.

In terms of expectations, they are not very high. I'm probably going to aim for a 10:00 min/mile for the first half, and play it by ear in for the second half. This will likely put me 30-35 minutes behind my PB, but I'm kind of in survival mode here. This is a "just try to finish" marathon for me. I'm taking this as an expensive and very long training run, a serious kick off to getting more focused for events through 2006.

SS, congrats for your hard work. I've been keeping up with your training progress, and I'm delighted that your chronic injuries have been just quiet enough to let you put in some good mileage. I hope you have a ball at what is considered one of the most beautiful marathons around. Not an easy one, though. Good luck!

Be that as it may... I could have stayed on the sofa the whole time, right? I'll let you know how my last (only?) big week of training goes next week before my "tapering week". That's funny... tapering... I do want to go in with fresh legs, though...

Take care all.

BTW, they have the coolest feature on the Las Vegas Marathon website (http://www.lvmarathon.com)... a full drive-through of the course (in 6 minutes).

Of course, it doesn't mean as much if you don't know the city, but I still thought that that was pretty cool.

Check it out. It's on the right-hand side.

Hey there Mars,

Sorry to hear about your setbacks. I know what you mean about other things plus injuries plus sickness coming up. It's how I've been feeling about Honolulu. I just want to finish, and I do know this one will be a hard one. I'm just going to take it all easy, considering the hills, and am even thinking of half crawling it and carrying a camera.

My ankle still hurts, and I've been training with a stiff ankle brace. Getting up at 6:15ish to run with KJ has been killing me, but motivating and I'm glad she's great company. If I lived any closer to you, Mars, we would be doing our long runs together ... forcing each other to go the distance.

As it stands, today has been more hectic than originally thought, and my planned 21k looks like it will be a HECK of a lot less (5k?). Argh. See what happens when I don't run with KJ in the morning? Well, this week was my "easy" week (my lame excuse for not running more), and next week will be my biggest training week with my longest runs ... help me out folks! I love the racing, hate the training.

Nice to hear that the crew had a good time last night - wish I was there, and great that you finally got to get out and meet some of us, Mercury.

Df: You know you're a doll and we love you.

Mrs. MM: You're a doll too and we not only love you, but we miss you. We're hoping that you'll stick around for a long while ... Hey, have you had a chance to get back into the gym and the weightraining?

Ralf: I'm happy that you took the time to reconnect with us, even though I didn't get to see you ... though I was there in spirit!

Alright folks, now it's time to get dressed for this miserably cold weather and go run. I missed the sun and now it's already getting dark already ... <sigh>

I won't be there on the mountain this Sunday but those who will be ... have fun!

Sloth Sally

p.s. Just back from my jaunt around the park ... Brrr! It's cold out there!

Thanks for everyones friendliness last night. The only down side was the parking ticket that greeted me afterwards. If I could only be more aware of the days of the week...... Ran indoors at the Y treadmill today. Too cold outdoors. Did one hour total, started at 7:30/mile and sped up to 6:58 for the last 15 minutes. That was my killer workout for the week. Thanks again everyone. See you all again soon.

Now ... if I could only do ONE mile at his slower pace ... <sigh>

Acidosis: No, no, January is not miserably cold ... it's F**KING FREEZING!!! I am sure most would concur ... Hey, we got to meet Mercury - when will we get to meet YOU?

I am thinking of running on an indoor track ... anyone have any experience with this?

Great to see everyone yesterday. Now that the '05 project is complete, more time for fun.

JB: I'll definitely be there. Looking forward to it.
Mars: You'll do just fine. You have such a strong base that I have no doubt that you can complete.
Ralf: Great seeing you buddy. Remember what I mentioned about heading over to your neighborhood to run one? It may be sooner than you think
SS: Good to know that you're putting in the hours despite the hurdles
Grommit: You'll always be Superman in my books
Chops: Looking forward to seeing you run one next year.
DF: Looking forward to running with you soon.

The focus has shifted toward retooling and getting ready for next season. Going back to doing the little things that I was not able to do because of al the long runs. Yup DR. more food Actually, more drills, strength and yoga. Yup. anything to, "improve" my running without running.

that would be me....... at the CEPSUM a couple of winters ago... its a great track 1/9th of a mile.... slightly banked, sometimes there's a football team doing drills ... always folk on the climbing wall...... NB use this track for short intervals/repeats.... do not run 10-12 miles at a time like I used to ..... injured myself by always running on an anti-clockwise night = bad case of tendenitis in the ankle/calf... if you must use a banked track alternate the direction..... dah!!

you might like to consider this gym SS although they are ultra-anal about the time spent on the limited number of cardio doo-dads tms...

chops where's my e-mail.... use the sympatico address.. run in the woods by lamp-light saturday early pm

Hey guys,

Great to see you all again last night, It seems like it was foreveer ago that I last saw you. Wonderful to meet you Mercury, hopefully we'll see you at some of our Thur runs. Sorry to hear about your ticket.

Glad to hear about the party enthusiasum, I will email out the "official" invite early next week. If I don't have your email, or it's not on your profile, be sure to send it to me!

TB, I know you don't want to hear it, or might disagree, but I still think you did awesome south of the border, I just want to (again) offer my large congratulations. I am very proud of you. And I hope you did treat yourself like a princess on your off time in the big apple! Way to go agian.

For anyone else interested, I am running on December 3rd with my mom on the mountain at another running room event - "The Santa Shufle". It's a 5K charity race starting at the lookout chalet around the top. This time benefitting the Salvation Army and their holiday efforts. Anyone is welcome to join My Mom & I. This event is her graduation event from the 5K clinic she has been taking all fall. I am so very proud of her. She won't be breaking any records, just impressing the **** out of me! THIS IS MY MOM!!!! RUNNING!!!! 5K!!!!

Anyway, good night all, I just got my a$$ kicked in Hockey, apparently this illness has taken a bit more out of me than I thought.

Or when will I meet you. Actually I've already met several of the people on this forum. I'll never forget Turtleboy, gotta be the least anal runner I know, sacraficed his race for a date. I've run with Mercury, actually got my tired legs whooped by Speedyfeet and Mikey3.14.... I've met Dragonsrouges and seen her race on a track, she even came running with us(Concordia). I've never actually met Ralf, but I've sent him pictures from Ste Anne de Bellevue. I get most of my runs in on the Thurs and Mon nights with either Boreal or Concordia, and on occassion both.

About indoor track. It's a nice way to run inside in the winter. But becareful though because since the perimeter is smaller you find yourself turning more often, and for this reason it's hard on the joints and especially hard on the I.T band.
