Houston - new thread

well, i don't see the houston thread on this page and didn't feel like searching for it...

we're only weeks away from the Houston marathon so thought I'd check in on people who were still training for it!

Re: Houston - new thread
Still training for it. Signed up several weeks ago. Have already completed one long-run of 17.75 miles, one long-run of 16.2 miles, and have covered 14.2 miles half a dozen times or so, including twice last week. I will be running the 30K in two weeks and plan to race that distance so that I can get a feel for just what kind of pace I should target for the full marathon. My only fear is that we'll have crappy weather. Either cold rain, or temperatures in the 60s or 70s, or 25 mph winds. Nothing you can do about that though, just pray.

Hey Cathy, I thought you were going to do the Sugar Land 5 mile turkey trot. I didn't see you there or see your name in the results.

I'll give Houston a bump. I am training for the marathon ~ it will be my second and I am hoping for a PR. My first was slower than I wanted. I ran the 25K but will not run the 30K. And I am loving the cooler weather!

I hate the cold too! I'm trying to figure out what to wear for the 30K tomorrow b/c it can take me 30 minutes to get warmed up when it's that chilly out.

For me, there's only 2 more long runs before the taper! I'm getting so excited for the marathon. I guess the 30k's weather will be good practice for the marathon weather.

Good luck to yall tomorrow!

How'd yall do?

Me, I did better than I thought. I wanted to do an overall of 3:35, but I did 3:12. I really tired now and won't get anything else from my weekend "to do" list accomplished, but that's fine by me!

Wow Lance ~ what a great time and hardware! Congrats on your race.

I didn't run the 30K. But I ran my long run later that afternoon and was wishing for cooler weather.

That's great Cathy. What a pleasant surprise.

There were two runners just behind me for the first 4 or 5 miles who talked and talked and ran the same pace the entire way. One was female and ended up being the overall female masters winner.

If you were conversational you definitely could have gone faster. That bodes well for you for the marathon. Good luck.

Re: Houston - new thread
Sounds like everyone is doing pretty well! I did the Jingle Bell Run last weekend--had a decent finish, but I'd still like to get faster. Guess I need to keep hitting the track...

Anyone else run this past Saturday morning? It wasn't really raining when my group started at ~6am. We met at Memorial Park, carpooled down to the marathon start, and ran the marathon course. A few of us (including me) were going to do ~14 and jump into the sag wagon, while the rest of the group did 21-23, finishing at the park (with an extra loop for those doing 23).

The first few miles were pretty nice, actually. By the time we headed down out of the Heights, though, it was starting to really come down. Montrose found us running through a lot of puddles on the choppy sidewalks (there were too many cars on the road to really run there). The live oak cover around Rice gave us a little break, but by that point, we were all drenched.

We headed into West U., and the rain slowed a bit, but the winds just made our wet clothes that much colder. By the time I jumped into the sag wagon on Wesleyan, I was absolutely freezing. They dropped me back at my car at Memorial, and I drove home with the heat cranked up as high as it would go. Even after a long, long, hot shower, my lips were still a bit blue.

Next time, I'll check the radar before I head out the door...

Happy holidays!

ewill

I did a 21 miler in that horrible weather last saturday at terry hershey. I hope the weather isn't that bad for the marathon.

What would be yall's ideal temperature marathon day?

Re: Houston - new thread
Anywhere in the 40s. Any colder and it takes too long to warm up, plus you freeze waiting for the start. Any warmer and you could be into the 60s by the latter part of the race.

Re: Houston - new thread
Hello,
I was just looking around to see if anyone was running the Houston and I found this one. Yeah! This is my first race and I am doing the half. I have been training for a while and am ready to go. I have gotten to 11 miles so I am not worried since my goal is just to finish. My biggest worry is the weather. It has been so warm but knowing Houston it could be hot one day and freezing the next. We probably wont know till the day of. Well, Im excited anyways!
