Dpurunr05,

Most people trek up to Barrington Hills to run real hills. Here is a route description for the standard route. People have been running this loop since at least the late 80's that I know of. It's really good for marathon training. But it's a mini-road trip for you just to get there.

http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=3120[/URL" target="_blank">

Closer to you there is a nice 9.5 mile dirt loop at the Waterfall Glen forest preserve, right off of I-55 at Cass Avenue in Darien. Lots of people will do two of these for their long run.

Kristy,

Thanks for your message. Siberian was a bit of a disaster for me this year. I have been having a LOT more butt pain the last three months, and on the Siberian course I just felt like my legs were planks. No flexibility, no "flow". On that course, with all the small (and big) ups & downs and the continual turning, I just could never get going. Bit of a bummer, I think this is the first time I ever failed to get one of the Top 50 t-shirts at the Siberian. (First ran it '88 or '89.) Kennekuk Road Runners did the usual great job and the post-race party was really fun. Lots of people travel from Indpls. and Chicago (as well as Bloomington, Springfield, Decatur and Champaign of course) to do Kennekuk races. At the postrace party I met a couple who know some of my neighbors - small world of running. So anyway, I was 100th OA in 58:26.

I have run St. Louis many times, but not at all since it became a spring race. They have not posted a course map yet, but expect to loop through Forest Park (perhaps twice); expect to loop through the brewery area and Soulard; and expect to have long, gradual inclines and descents on east-west streets such as Olive Blvd. So overall expect nice variety on the course and probably not any ridiculous climbing.

They have had some goofy small things over the years like not enough toilets at the start, which should surely be fixed by now. For more current info on St. Louis check the feedback pages on marathonguide.com. Weather-wise, I always thought they had the ideal situation when they were always on the Sunday before Thanksgiving. But I doubt whether those days are ever coming back, which makes it unlikely that I would ever do St. Louis again.

I have entered Glass City (back in Dec.) but it now looks likely that I will miss it for the 2nd year in a row. My rear end is just giving me huge problems right now. Seeing a sports chiro for that, but considering complementary options.

Hope you all are doing well. If I'm not at Glass City I will be at the Shamrock Shuffle in Chicago, either running or volunteering.

Hi all,

Bumping this one back up.

I did go to DePauw, as asked above. Great school, I'm sure comet will agree ;-).

Did anyone go running yesterday and today (Sat and Sun) Wasn't it great? (If you did). I would definitely go with this weather all year. Last summer was just too intense and I have a feeling this summer won't be any different.

EMFrimbo, thanks for the course. I might drive up there for that, but I definietely want to try Waterfall Glen sometimes. Again the problem is driving. I know you will be doing the shamrock shuffle, anyone else? I bought my green guiness t-shirt yesterday :-) Also, is there anyone here doing the Chicago Distance Classic? I know LaSalle Bank took over, and it is supossed to be a new downtown course. Any speculation on where it might be? Have a good week,

-Chris

Whoo hoo!

I set a new half marathon PR today! 1:33:37!!!

I didn't think it was possible. I think that every time I set a new one. This one will be tough to top though because I took three minutes off my old one. Oh yeah, it was at the Delavan half marathon (a tiny town near Peoria). The temps were great, but it was really windy (I'd estimate 20 mph) and the course is out in the country around cornfields with no wind blocks. Anyway I am thrilled. I was the 2nd female. I think there may have been 150 runners or so there. My 2nd place finish sounds good until you hear the winner's time: 1:23:XX. She broke the course record. I finished second to her last year too. She's an animal. The results haven't been posted yet, but I bet she was among the top ten men. PR and all, compared to her, I feel humbled!

bump!

Shamrock Shuffle time!

I learned today that this is the largest 8K in the world (25,000). Fortunately they have a very liberal policy for "competitive" and "preferred" starting positions, just behind the elites.

I'm coming off a lingering cold/flu, but plan to be down there more for fun than to compete hard.

Weather permitting I'll be hanging out at the postrace party in my first Shamrock Shuffle shirt - from 1981.

Who else?

Hey EM,

I won't be at the Shuffle, but I keep getting bombarded with emails since I ran Chicago. I have never raced the 8K distance. Seems like it's all 5 or 10K around here. Good luck at your race though. I'm sure you'll have a blast if it's even 1/10th the fun as the marathon.

I did get my bib number for my next race, though!!! I will be running STL on April 9. #58 baby!!! Uh oh... does this mean they think I'm fast or something? Ha Ha!

I'm in Rockford IL--and new to this site, though not new to running. I run most of the time in Cherry Valley, IL and have listed a lot of my routes on usatf.

Is anyone running the Chicago Classic HM this year? I hadn't really heard about it before. I'm running a HM in Dallas this Sunday with a friend, but just to run. I'd like to do the Chicago race for a PR.

I ran the Chicago Distance Classic last year and really enjoyed it. Well organized and good post race stuff. Last year it was run by John the penguin Bingham, very cool penguin medals.
This year LaSalle Bank has taken over and put a $50 price tag on it, I believe it was like $35 or so last year. I'm thinking of running it again this year, but have not yet committed myself. I really like the course, if it is the same as last year...

Anyone familiar with Christie Clinic's version of the "Run for the Health of It" races? I can't seem to get any info about where to go on race day, what time each of the races start, whether it's possible to register on race day, and whether there's a time limit on the 10k race. I've left messages for the phone number that's on their very-very-brief website, but no answer yet. Maybe it's been run for long enough that they don't figure they need to bother with details in their postings?

Yes. I have run the Christie race every year for the past 6 years, I think. Unfortunately, I'll be missing it this year because DH and I are running the St Louis marathon instead.

I don't think Christie has any info online. The race starts at either 8:15 or 8:25. I think they send off the wheelchair racers (if there are any) at the earlier slot. There is raceday registration for both 5K and 10K, but it's a little more $$ than early registration (I think it's $20 on raceday). The race starts at the downtown Champaign location of Christie clinic (near Randolph and University). The race applications are at Body n' Sole (running shop). They'll be happy to give you information. I think packet pickup will take place there tonight too (might be able to register at that). Their phone number is 217-356-8926 or stop by at 1317 Dunlap (aka Neil st or rt 45) in Savoy.

Well, I ran the Christie race, but did the 5k. I'd like a few more under my belt before trying a 10k. And I posted a PR (33:42), which was nice!

And It was FREEZING out there!! My first race without a "support crew," so I couldn't bring anything I wasn't going to wear during the race, so no windbreaker while waiting for the start. Brrrr!

I'm in Plainfield, Illinois and I run at 5:00am around the north side (Van Dyke, 119th street.. that area). Anyone who wants a running partner in the mornings, let me know. I like to run 7-10 miles on weekdays early before work.
