A great Spring, indeed!!
I have the Soldier Field 10 coming up on May 27th. Other than some favorite 5/10K's during the summer, it's Marathon training again for Chicago!

Yellow,

I'm new to these boards, but yes, I'm definitely going to be participating in the North Shore Half. It will be my first half marathon ever. I've been training for many months for it. I'm definitely excited!

When is the North Shore Half? I plan to do Chicago in Oct as my first full marathon and thought a half some time before that would be a good thing to do. Thanks

Thanks for the info and links, Nirvana, I don't know if doing the half just 3 weeks before the full marathon is right. What do others think about that? Or should I consider an earlier half before the Chicago Marathon? Sorry for too many questions.

I think in general it's a bad idea, but then again, I'm probably going to do it myself. I'm also young and feel invincible. And will probably get injured. It's probably a better idea to try the one in Normal (if you're from Central IL) in September though.

Hi Curt, Another fellow central Illinoisan here (Champaign). I am also young (and some might say stupid), but I have run a half 3 wks before a full. Actually I ran a half (Delavan, IL) March 12, a full (St Louis) April 9, a half (Indy) May 6, and I will be running another full in < 2 wks (Bayshore in MI) on May 27.

Anyway, I'd encourage you to run the Bloomington half. I've done it twice and although it was hotter than heck this year, I had a great time. I will warn you though, it's hilly in the latter 3 miles. They have you go up and down 4 overpasses at a really bad stage in the race! If you're up for a tougher challenge, go for the Mahomet Half, which is held during the delightful month of August. If you can tackle it, the heat at Bloomington is nothin'! Ha ha! Last year, I ran Mahomet and Bloomington and followed up with Chicago. Bloomington and Chicago used to be 4 weeks apart, but now with Chicago later, if Bloomington doesn't change, they'll be 6 weeks apart.

7 am

Start time really wouldn't have mattered much this year. The issue was as much a factor of the humidity (which is no easier to deal with earlier in the am) as it was the heat. I am pretty certain we reached the 90s that day and had dew points in the mid to upper 70s (very, very uncomfortable).

Strangely, it was actually hotter at the Bloomington half last year. The humidity was more tolerable though and it was much more comfortable.

To put things in perspective, I was 10 minutes off my PR at Mahomet and 7 off in Bloomington. I tend to fare better in the cold than the heat, however.

Speaking of Mahomet, are you running the Buffalo Trace 5 miler Saturday? I'll be there, but volunteering with the other Second Winders instead of racing since I have a marathon the following Saturday.

Thanks for the advise ks and Aminal, I just checked the Lake Run Club site and the half marathon in Normal is not on the race calendar and I do believe I heard someone the other night say they didn't think it was going to happen this year so I may have to look at the Mahomet half. Guess I will see where I am at that stage of my training. I do live in Normal and try to run a number of races in the area. Hope to see you somewhere this summer. I am also the race director(with my brother) for the Dawson Lake 5K on Aug 12th. There are race apps on our website. www.lakerunclub.org[/URL" target="_blank"> We will be having technical shirts this year if you are interested in that. Check it out. Thanks
Curt

Sorry ks, I will be running a race in IA on Sat. It's the Great River Bridge 6 miler in Burlington. We run up the Snake Alley and across the bridge to IL and back to the riverfront in Burlington. Tough race but a lot of fun.

Oh dear, there go my plans! Maybe it will be cool at Mahomet somehow this year...

If there really is no Normal half, I may finally get my chance to race the Decatur Shoreline Classic 15K on September 16. Oh wait, on the Decatur site, they have the Normal half listed...Decatur Running Club[/URL" target="_blank">

Must just be an error. I am sure the club that puts it on (Lake Run) knows more than Decatur. Might have to check out the Dawson 5K, Curt. There aren't a lot of August races, and I keep looking to break that 20 min 5K barrier. Probably would've done it a long time ago had I not gotten myself into the slippery slope we call marathoning!
