Hello All!

I am new to this board, I used to frequent marathonguide.com, but a few hostile people have made the board less helpful. Anyway, I like having the opportunity to share running with fellow believers. I read a couple of posts back that cxrunner/Amy prefers running trails. I don't know where you are willing to go for running, but my church running group ran at an event in Newark, DE called the Triple Crown and it was an awesome run. I ran a half and it kicked my butt, but the challenge was well worth the beauty and peace of the run. I find that my running time is a time of peace, prayer, and praise. Sometimes my prayer is for the Lord to give me the strength to make it through my run, at other times, I'm glad to just meditate on the Lord....

Hey Runslow4Jesus,

I'm new also and I agree that my running time usually turns into a praise and worship time. I find myself praising God for everything from endorphins to my wonderful family and for His Grace. I love morning running when it's just me and God.

I thank the Lord that I can run even though I'm not fast or anything. It's just a blessing to run.

I have not read everyone's posts on this thread (I just found it and am sort of busy w/ work). But, I just really wanted to share that running actually is how I found God (or, how he found me!) I was not brought up in a very religous home (although I had a wonderful, blessed childhood), but have always been curious about Christianity. So, when my husband and I moved into a new condo, a church was on my running route. I would run past it almost every day. Finally, one Sunday, I convinced by husband to go with me, and this started a relationship with the Pastor. My husband and I joined the Church and I was baptized a few months later.

So, I just thought you all would appreciate the story of how running has brought (besides the physical and emotional benefits to my life), the spiritual benefits to my life as well as giving my husband and I a wonderful aspect to our marriage!

Happy running!

I was just looking through here and am glad there are other God lovers out there. I met Jesus in 1979. I didn't meet him running unless you count running away from him as running. I find that when I'm running I liken it to my christian walk in this way: There are times when I'm running too fast and I find it's hard to continue. So I'll slow down and try to slow my breathing down. I think the Lord told me at one time that this is how I should walk this walk as well. This is something that is going to take a while so slow down, breathe slow and set your eyes on the finish. Yes it will take a long time, but you don't need all of your energy for just this moment. Save some for down the road. If I take it slow, I will be able to finish. It's kind of like one day at a time. I can't finish this race(life)right at this time. I don't have enough strength to get to the finish yet, but if I slow down and just take care of the moment at hand then I will have what it takes to finish. I hope this makes sense. It sounds so cool in my head but sometimes the words don't come out so good. Anyway, God bless everyone. God loves us.

Curt

Wow ugarun! What a story! I agree with Ray and Curt about running having a lot of parallels to our christian walk. I am new to distance running. I was formerly a sprinter many years ago, but after hainvg my 2nd child, I figured long distance running would be a good way to lose weight and clear my mind. Anyway, in the couple of half-marathons I have trained for and run in the last year I have found that there are many days when I am running when I want to quit because staying the course seems impossible or difficult. These days are mostly the really hot and humid days or the days when it is hot, humid, AND I have hills to run. The irony to me is that my christian life has been this way....problems/trials/temptations "heat up" life and make it uncomfortable and there are always "uphill" challenges at every turn, whether they be work, family, health, etc....but thank goodness for the everlasting hope we have in Jesus. Knowing that my life is in HIS hands and that there is a greater purpose and promise in living my life for HIM, makes all the discomfort I experience in life and sometimes in running too---all worth it in the end.

Ok....on a different note, anybody have any creative ways to stay motivated during long runs (besides music). I am training for my first full marathon and I am dreading having to run more than 10 miles in the upcoming weeks---especially now that is hot. The other drag is that my usual running route is full of hills and I'd have to drive 15 to 20 minutes to get somewhere more flat, which would be a track. Any ideas??

Hey Runslow4JESUS,
I'm facing a similar situation. I've trained previously in Champaign, IL where it was flat and I could vary my routes easily, but now I live in the Augusta, GA area and it is quite hilly. My plan is to use my Garmin 201 to change my route on the fly. Hopefully this will keep things interesting. I did 11 last saturday like this and it was quite enjoyable.

I don't like running with music so varying my routes is my technique.

By the way, on the longer runs, you'll find that you will probably spend some quality time with God, especially right around miles 12-15. Enjoy those miles when you can just trot along and praise God...they go by quickly.

Wow...good to see this kind of thread around. I've been part of coolrunning for a while and just never found it I guess. Good luck to all of you and your running and may God keep you going even if you dont think you can anymore.

I ran my last marathon with 1 phrase from Isa. 40:31. "I shall run and not weary". I would meditate on it and mutter it.

Several months later my son who was a freshamn in HS was burning up the 5k's when I saw ink on his palm. I asked him what he had written, the exact same phrase. He PR'ed by over 1 minute in a more difficult course than previously.

Ray--

I really appreciate your posts, in this and other threads that I've read. It's also nice to find a group of believers on this board.

In the last half that I ran, I was quoting Heb. 12:1 to myself the final two miles, looking for the strength to endure to the end. Now, with several difficult situations that I'm having, I find myself thinking back to that race, and once again finding the strength to endure. It's wonderful how running can add such a dimension to our spiritual lives.

I've read this thread several times, but have yet to post... but like the last poster said its nice to see a group of believers on the board.

I've been a Christian ("officially") since 2000, and began running in February this year.

Several verses motivate me... Philippians 4:13, Hebrews 12:1-3... and then there's the story of the prodical son. When I run I try to imagine Jesus at the end, with his arms wide open waisting to take me into his embrace... and why would I want to walk to Jesus? Granted, it doesn't work every time... but every time I stop to take a short 10-30 sec walk, I keep telling myself "Run to Jesus"

I ran a 5K today, with pain in my ankle, and broke my race PR (though not in the time I was aiming for), because I kept trying to keep that mindset.

Thanks for the suggestions and scriptures. I will definitely take to heart "I shall run and not get weary"....this is way better than the "no pain, no gain"....I've been muttering. I'll look into the Garmin 201. Since I'm kinda new to distance running I didn't know a GPS type device existed for running.

I'll keep everyone posted on my progress....

Hi Everyone! I am so excited...I just found this website and I just found this forum. I have been praying about finding running partners and sure enough, God has answered my prayer <I am not suprised>
I have been a Christian for 2 1/2 years but running for much longer. I no longer run with my pre-christian running mates (time and life directions make it difficult!) Though, God has put this desire and this ability to run in my heart..I find the long miles sometimes challenging. I hope to hear from others on this forum on ways to stay motivated when you know you have to run but are not sure of God' s purpose for your running blessings yet.
God Bless!
