LONG runs - Portland, Ore.?

I'm training for a marathon in the Portland, Oregon area. I've run a number of 16, 18 and even one 20 miler so far with just five weeks to go. The problem is that I am SO bored with my running routes! I've run the same general route 4 or 5 weeks now and just can't do it anymore. I'm having some trouble coming up with others that are much different. Does anyone have some good long routes in or around Portland? I've been running on city streets and sidewalks so I want to continue this and not run trails at this point. Ideas?

Cherl~

I'm building my base so that I can start training for the Portland OR marathon on Oct 1 so your post caught my eye.

You might want to check out "FREE Run Schedule" on the Team Oregon website. They have suggestions for a range of runs. I don't have any personal experience with any of these runs (I'm in Northern CA) but good luck!

Hey Cherl,

I have mapped out tons of long runs in my neck of the woods in SW Portland. If you email me, I can give you more details and let you know what area I live in. kelmarker@gmail.com

I would love to run with you sometime, if you are interested. It seems like we are around the same pace, with the same goals. Just let me know.

I do most of my long runs, 12 to 23 mostly around the waterfront with additional loops along the way. Pretty flat, but great for training. Count the waterfront from Steel to Selwood at just over 10 miles. To amp up the miles I usuallu head out toward the Bibbey Bridge over to Reed College t add about 3-4 miles. I'll also take off before the Steel and rundown Naito to add miles.

I LOVE FOREST PARK. LEIF ERICKSON IS THE EASIEST RUN. DRIVE TO THE TOP OF NW THURMAN AND PARK. WALK THROUGH THE GATE AND START RUNNING. THIS IS A NO TRAFFIC DIRT ROAD THAT RUNS 11 MILES (22 OUT AND BACK). MILE MARKERS EVERY QUARTER MILE. ONLY DRAWBACK IS NO WATER EXCEPT AT START AND ONLY 1 BATHROOM AT 1/2 MILE. SO PACK YOUR WATER. IF YOU GET ADVENTUROUS, THERE IS ALSO WILDWOOD TRAIL WHICH GOES FURTHER AND IS PRETTIER, BUT THIS IS TRAIL RUNNING, SO YOU HAVE TO PAY A LITTLE MORE ATTENTION.

Leif Erickson Road is a cool place to run, but if you go I would park on the end by Thurman street rather than Germantown Rd. There is more activity there, houses nearby and would be less likely to have your car broken into.

Personally I like to do long runs starting and ending at home. FitRightNW has a few links for local runs and also had this mapping link: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/[/URL" target="_blank"> that calculates distances so you can map your own routes.

I've used it and compared to distances measured with my bike computer and it seems pretty accurate.

Ever do the springwater trail? Park at Willamette Park off of Macadam Ave. Head north, toward the city. It takes you through the waterfront, across a bridge (wow, I'm a native portlander and I can't even tell you which one - sad), then back south past omsi, through oaks bottoms, back across the sellwood bridge, down Macadam and back toward Willamette Park. It's 10.5 miles once around - do it twice and you have 21.
Edited to add that despite the monicker, this is not rough "trail" - it's all paved.
