I just started running about a 1 1/5 months ago, and haven't stopped yet. The reason why I started running was due to turning 40, fitness, and if I complete a 1.5 mile run in under 13:14, I will receive a $600 check from my employer.

My first race (5K) is this Saturday in Bowdoinham, but I spoke to the organizer and she said that only 14 people signed up. Their still having the race, but my chance of coming in last is real. I just started continious running 35 minutes which get be just about to 3 miles +/- a little.

I my say that for me to be running this much and TRULY ENJOYING it is not like me. I also hated running, but after completing the C5K program, I know I can do anything, and enjoy it. My goal is to run a HM next year with my wife.

I was wondering if anyone has done the Cape Elizabeth Sprint Triathlon? If you have let me know what your thought are it 1.5 mile run, 14 mile bike, and 3 mile xc run.

Thanks for all the support, and I will let everyone know how I did this weekend.

Well I Finished, even though it was last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is the break down.

There were only 16 runners in the race, just a local school community one. LOTS OF HILL!!!!, and we even had to run through a corn field (This was not in my training routine ) My final time was 33:14 All in All I felt pretty good even though I came in last and don't worry I won't give up, I'll just run in a bigger group LOL!!

Thanks for all the encouragement and support I really appreciated it.

How is this possible? I walked/ran 3 miles today in 19 seconds longer than I WALKED the same course 2 weeks ago. I tried to go slow because I read that long runs (this is my long run) should be slow, but geesh....

Congratulations OOTMAN on finishing your first race!

Gallowalker, ditto to what boothy said. You're doing great, it just takes time. Some of us have been right where you are

Hi fellow Maine runners,

It's nice to see new people joining the exchange here. I am one of the "southern runners", i.e. from York County. We have a range of southern and central Maine runners occasionally participating on this thread. It would be nice to see more activity and support for one another, yet I realize how busy folks are. The recent spate of posts is encouraging.

I am from Biddeford and have been running on and off since 1978. My first running shoes were Nike "waffle" running shoes and I liked their lightness and today there are so many more choices. I took a few years off while living in Florida and Georgia, but have been running steady for the past ten years. My experience with road racing is limited to the past two years and I found I enjoy the competitiveness and being with many like minded people. My first race was a half marathon (not what I'd recommend others try) and have been hooked since. I ran several 5K and 10K races this summer and my next race is the Disneyland inaugural Half Marathon in Anaheim followed up with the Maine Half Marathon October 1.

I would like to encourage the newer runners to continue and I hope this addition to your routine becomes permanent. As mentioned in other posts, don't get hung up on your time, especially compared to what other are doing. I run against myself and performance can improve over time, but my biggest motivation to run is just to be outside and enjoy my time alone or at times with a group and seeing improvement in ability. The ancillary benefits of maintaining low weight and being healthier are secondary to me (and many runners) to the enjoyment I get from running.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Brian

Hey Mainers! I usually don't post at all on Cool Runnings, but I do love to see the Maine Runners Page with new entries. I'm planning to run the Eliot 5K, but haven't registered yet. It will be only my second 5K this year and third overall (I did one last fall). I run about a 12 minute mile, usually, but my cross-country coach of a stepson tells me to do some shorter, faster intervals alternating with fast walking in order to build up some speed (I can do a 5K without too much difficulty, but I am tired of being so SLOW). So, I'm trying to "train" for this 5K and beat my PR. Does anyone have any experience with the Eliot course? Is it hilly?

Hi all-

Anyone planning to run the Maine Marathon or Half? I'm running the half. This will be my second HM (first was the Big Lake in NH on 5/13) and I'm just hoping that it doesn't rain (or should I say "monsoon") like at Big Lake!

Seriously - does anyone know how long they keep the course open or the clock on at the Eliot 5K on the 30th?

Gallo, i'd like to personally invite you over to the back of the packer's forum in the newbie cafe. we're all quite friendly, and in fact, i've seen fellow mainer sawtej over there as well lately No need to ever feel humiliated for your speed...as long as you're out there running, you should be proud of yourself.
Happy Running.

Sisu68 - I am running the Maine Marathon - my very first marathon. I ran the HM last year and loved it so I promised myself to run the full one this year. I hurt my leg a couple of weeks ago so training had to slow down but i am healing up well. I am excited for the race to see if i can finish !! I also pray for no rain (I hate rain esp. cold rain) Last year it was a beautiful sunny day !! Good luck to you on your HM.
