Running Tracks in New York City - Outdoor or Indoor

Does anyone know of an outdoor or indoor track available for the public's use in New York City (preferably in Manhattan)? I know that Chelsea Piers has one available but you need membership there. Any others that I might be able to use for some speed work?

Any information would be much appreciated!
Thx.

East River Park, at East 6th Street. Pretty beat up, but better than nothing.

Riverbank State Park - West 145th Street and Riverside Drive. Very nice facility.

You used to be able to run on City College's track, but I wouldn't count on it.

Indoors there's the Armory at 168th and Ft. Washington Avenue, but you have to pay a pretty hefty fee for a season pass, although probably cheap compared to a membership at Chelsea Piers.

In the outer boroughs there are a lot more options, including Van Cortlandt Park, Astoria Park, Red Hook Park, Midwood Field.

There's a track in Central Park on top of the Great Hill. It's not the best- there's no marks in it at all for distance or lanes- but I think it's 440 meters.

There's one in Brooklyn I used to go to when I lived near there. It's in Williamsburg, 2nd or 3rd stop on the L (Lorimer or Graham, I think Lorimer's closer) and then a little walk. I couldn't give you exact directions to save my life, but maybe one of the online map sites can help out. I know it's not far- maybe 2-3 blocks-past the BQE. That one's a nicer track; measured lanes and distance and stuff. There was often a police car hanging out there, I don't really know why.

I'm sure there are others in the boroughs, probably in parks and residential neighborhoods more than in Manhattan.

The Murray Bergtrum, Verizon Field is supposed to be open to the public but it's always empty until spring training. It has a nice track which looks like it would go really easy on my shins so I've been tempted to try it. It is on the corner of Market and Cherry Streets on the lower east side. There is a phone number listed for information on using it but I don't have it. You might want to try calling the High School or NYC Dept. of Parks.

The next time I pass it I'll get the number and call for information. Then I'll let you know.

Thanks Lonesome Dove! Did you happen to try that run around all of Manhattan yet? I'll be running a 19 miler this weekend and something like that would be SWEET!

Hey, Maria! I haven't ventured out for the tour of manhattan yet but it's still on my wish list. Where are you running the 19 this weekend?

The number for the track on Monroe Street is 212-521-2232. I'm hoping cool runnings lets me post it. If you want some company or someone to hold the stop watch, let me know.

Good luck with the run!!

The Great Hill track in Central Park is 339.2 meters or 371 yards.

There is also a cinder track in Riverside Park, lower level, at 72nd St. I have no idea how long it is but watch out for potholes.

McCarren Park, I believe.

Astoria Park has a nice track if you fancy the run out there. It's right under the Tri-borough Bridge, so you could get a bit of a hill work out on your way.

If you run the track at the East River Park then watch out for the undulations, I've come close to twisting my ankle on numerous occassions -- its worse than running trail, I swear!

Another option, although I?m sure you?re aware of this, is the reservoir loop in Central Park. It has yards and miles calibrated on the inside curb, so if you fancy doing some kind of interval or fartlek workout it can work well.
