Re: Macon Area Running
I see what you mean. Wasn't aware of store credits and all that - just wanted something to shoot for, no freebies. Until you mentioned it, I never even noticed that the MTRC team includes reibursement for travel & stuff.

As far as requirements, this is what's on the MTRC site for women:

Women?s Open Team Standards:
Distance A Team B Team
5K 19:30 21:59
10K 40:30 43:59
½ Marathon 1:30:00 1:45:00
Marathon 3:15:00 3:45:00

Qualifying time for Scott's age div in the 5K is 18:50. So I guess what you're saying is that the RunFit team has the same qualifications at the MTRC team, then. No problem - I must have misunderstood you, perhaps you were just joking that day. Wouldn't want to embarass the team, and I'm certainly not looking to get something for nothing.

Re: Macon Area Running
Well guys, I guess I'm no longer JUST a runner. I finished my first triathlon yesterday at Callaway Gardens. I finished 21st overall and 2nd in my age group. If only the run had been longer....haha

Re: Macon Area Running
Congratulations, Josh. I knew you'd do great. How was that water? Suni Heaton was just telling me yesterday at the triangle that it's usually pretty muddy, making it hard to swim.

Re: Macon Area Running
Yeah, the water was kinda muddy and nasty, but I don't think I ever put my head under the water (which I know isn't the right way to swim), so I guess I can't really say either way. Still, it was a lot of fun.

Re: Macon Area Running
I want to get into triathalons as well. It it something that i have been aiming for for a long time but I just never find the time or money for that matter. I think as soon as I run my half marathon in September I am going to get into triathalons or at least start training for one. A couple of years back I wanted to do the iron man one day but that dream has been put on the back burner.

Re: Macon Area Running
Scott and I are registered for the Beach Bum Sprint Triathlon in Hilton Head on July 30th, but we signed up before we realized that the entire race is on the beach and in the ocean! We knew about the swimming part, (duh) but it looks like we'll be running & biking on the beach as well. We're waiting to hear from the race director to find out whether to bring mountain or road bikes, so it should be an adventure.

Wanna join us?

Re: Macon Area Running
Just found out mountain bikes will work just fine - the beach will be flat & hard (low tide.) Good news for me because I have a good mountain bike, but no road bike yet. Whew!

By the way, I just checked the standards for ATC's competitive teams out of curiosity. Perry & Kyle are going waaaaaaaay easy on us slow-pokes! Thanks, guys!

Re: Macon Area Running
Yeah, I asked someone about the Beach Bum Tri and they told me on Sunday that it was all on the beach, including the run and bike, so I guess count me out for that one. I might tri (haha, sorry, I couldn't help it) the one in Carrollton on the 17th of July and the one at Lake Blackshear in August.

And about the ATC Standards, they are pretty tough, I've yet to meet them myself, but I"m still trying.

Alan's the only person around here that I know has made that team.

Re: Macon Area Running
Just out of curiosity how much does it cost to sign up for most triathalons?? I jacked up my ankle today. I am really upset because I was only a few days away from training for my half marathon in September. I was playing basketball and just came down wrong on it. It is a little swolen and I am hoping that a few days off will be good enough but there is no telling if it is bad quite yet.

Re: Macon Area Running
We're planning to do the Veteran's Memorial Tri at Lake Blackshear, too. From what I've seen so far, avg registration fee is $45-$55, but if it's a USAT sanctioned event, you'll need to pay an additional $9 every time unless you become a USAT member. Scott has - it's just $30 per year, and it pays for itself after you've done a few tri's.

You know, there's one in Destin on August 27th. Anybody feeling REALLY brave? If you're attacked by a shark during a triathlon, do you think you deserve some kind of honorary award, like a purple heart or something? How about a purple wetsuit, bike and racing flats?

I found a good triathlon calendar:

Re: Macon Area Running
Spencer, I'm sure you know this, but apply RICE to your ankle. (Rest, ice, compression, elevation.) And lay off the basketball if you want to do a half. Scott keeps doing that too, and it almost always hurts his training. He loves basketball, though.

Back before I realized that I overpronate, I was training for the Callaway half. I showed up for the race with shin splints, achilles tendonitis, ace bandages up to my knees and a trunk full of ice packs. Needless to say, it wasn't my best performance. On top of the injuries I brought with me to the race, I lost three toenails because the stability shoes I bought a week before at Dick's didn't have enough room in the toebox. Perry & Josh have since straightened me out, New Balance clown shoes notwithstanding.

Point is, listen to your body & take care of it. You'll still be able to reach your goals; you've got time.

Re: Macon Area Running
You guys do realize that Lake Blackshear is infested with alligators don't you??? I heard that there are a lot over there this year. My in laws went jet skiing over there and said that it is no joke. So that is just a word of warning for everyone to take note on. Good news on the ankle!!! I can walk pretty normal after one day. It only hurts a little and now I have a four day weekend to rest it before I start my training next week. I have already been hooked up with good shoes from the store and it does make a world of difference. Before I had back pain and knee pain....the shoes changed all of that. Alright then....my next goal after this half-marathon is to buy a bike and start preparing for triathalons. I had a chance to but a really nice racing bike for 500 dollars but I passed it up and now I am regretting it. I found the same one online for 1700 dollars....the guy said it was a deal but I passed on it anyway.

Re: Macon Area Running
I'm aware of the alligators at Blackshear, my family has a place there and has ever since I was born. I've seen tons of them, but from what I understand, they do the swim at the beach part of the lake which is pretty much open water and I don't think there is a real threat, not to mention, all those people splashing around in the water, I think the gators would be going the other way. Plus, it's a short swim, so you won't be in the water that long, and the park/camp ground area over there is pretty flat, should be a good one.

Good Luck to everyone doing Peachtree, I'll be there, and I'll also be working at the Expo, so anyone who goes, stop by the Reebok booth and say Hi.

Re: Macon Area Running
Josh,

That does make sense on the alligators being afraid of all of the splashing people. I am going to have to buy a bike soon so if anyone knows a good place to get a good deal at then let me know. How does the transition work?? They always make it look so easy on the TV but I always thought it would be difficult to make the changes. Do you have your shoes tied already...do you run bike and swim in the same thing??....give me the low down.
