A longshot... Germany???

Hi,

I'm American butI've been living for the past ten years in a town called Kulmbach in Upper Frankonia (Oberfranken), Bavaria, Germany. I'm currantly training for a marathon in the "Fraenkische Schweiz" ("Franconian Switzerland") in September and would be thrilled to actually locate someone here who is familiar with the region and the race!

For anybody who happened to click this out of curiosity, I want to mention that I think I live in one of the most idylic and runner-friendly places on Earth. My runs are along twisting, lovingly maintained country roads, through little farming villages, past small lakes and forests. I can go up and down hills when I want, or avoid them completely. I'm more likely to be passed by bike riders than cars when I run in the evening or early on the weekends.

One of the biggest benefits for me are the narrow, maybe 2-foot wide shoulders along the roads. They're a perfect running surface, almost custom-tailored to help me with my shin splint plague. They're packed sand and gravel and short grass, relatively smooth and as well-maintained as the roads themselves.

I'm a happy camper here :-)

I'm actually headed back to Dusseldorf this Sunday. I lived there for about a year and met my wife over there. I have to say I look forward to this trip mostly because of the beautiful paths you described that are all along the Rhine. Germany is a very well kept country. They have a lot of pride in thier land and you can tell it's well taken care of.

I live in Germany too! I "met" another American here too on this site. She is in Stuttgart, I am north of Munich, but soon to be in Cologne ( again)

I just had to click and say " I'm here too!" You are so right, running here is FANTASTIC! I run in fields here and in Cologne we will live directly next to a forest. What is better than that??

I'll be in Germany for a reunion in Berlin and visiting family in Munich. You are right about how beautiful it is. My uncle has a farm in Oberbayern, close to the woods. The trails are amazing. Sorry, I can't help you out about the race you are talking about.

They also have many, many hike and bike trails that run all over the country. I just discovered the Rheinsteig, a hiking path that runs along the Rhein all the way from Weisbaden to Bonn. The only drawback is that it has no km markers. Maybe it's time to get a shoe pod? (No, it's not visible on Google, unfortunately).

I've been in Dusseldorf the whole week running along the Rhine. I do about 5 miles out and then 5 miles back.

I should use google earth to figure out how long of a run it would be to Koln if I kept going down the Rhine.

I'm going back to NY this sunday though.

btw: why do you put water in your alt and call it kolsch?

I'm loving running in Germany, too (Stuttgart). In fact, it got me started just over a year ago. I've already done a first marathon and training for one in the fall. Michelizda, maybe your Stuttgart friend would be interested in a running partner??

Herb-

What is it with those from Duesseldorf and those from Cologne?? My DH has such strong opinions about this being from Köln!

The Rhine route sounds fantastic. I have rollerbladed along the Rhine but not been running there.
