Big Sur Marathon

I am new to running and thinking about doing my first marathon next year. I would LOVE to do the Big Sur marathon but have heard it is hilly...any advice? I am doing wharf to wharf in a couple weeks as my FIRST race, and have signed up for the Big Sur 1/2 marathon in October, but that one looks pretty flat. any advice would be great!

After you do the 1/2, and you continue your training level, around late January start to build in hillwork on your longer runs. It gets you mentally and physically prepared for the course.
In the January timeframe, we usually start posting in the "Race Together" Section. Last year several of us got together for a couple of runs.
Get through the Half first, then start to slowly gear up for the longer distance.
IMO, this run is as much attitude as it is physical.
You will start to see a ton of advice coming up during that conversation.
Probably the most inportant thing to remember is to start out slow and then take it easy. Enjoy the scenery, and the miles will go quickly.

Hi Jesa,
I ran the half and the full. The half is a great race with lots of people and good crowd support. Its a nice course that starts and ends in Monterey with the turnaround near the start of 17 mile drive. The full marathon is further south in the glorious Big Sur area.

Steve provided great advice and knows what he's talkin about (heck, he should; he's run every BSM since they started the race).
