Re: Crim 10 Miler - August 26, 2006 - Flint, Michigan
Thanks for the info Lynne! I'm pretty sure I can hit under 90 minutes because I've done a 10miler+ a few times @ 9:00 minute pace. In fact, my plan is to run the practice run in 90 minutes and then just enjoy the actual race and "become one with the spectators" on race day. I've never run it before but heard they are as friendly as can be and would like to not be under any pressure to hit a pace goal. As the weeks go on, my goal for the Free Press has gone from sub 4 hrs, to just finishing it, so even if I don't hit 90 during the practice, I hope to put my ego in check and still have fun on the 26th.
Anyone running the Bastille in Fenton this weekend?

Mark

Kommish77 - I got under 90 minutes once and barely (89:58). Before had the champion chip I finished a couple times around 91 minutes so I'm sure those races were also below 90 minutes since it took me a couple minutes to get to the start. Let's keep our fingers crossed for a cool morning. Once I ran it when the start was 55 degrees so wouldn't that be nice??? If you haven't already registered for the **** run or haven't committed to it, you might want to run the Crim training run on the 13th (see note before this one above).

55 degrees would be awesome, I might win the whole race in that weather... or not!!

I usually run the Crim course once or twice during July/August each year leading up to the race, so I guess doing the "organized" training run isn't that big a deal. Actually before I moved, just outside Flint, a couple of years ago, most of my training runs were on part of the Crim course.

I have no idea on my time this year because I started doing low HR training and have been running VERY slow for the last 4 months. Should be interesting to see what happens. I will do the Tuuri this year as my tuneup race. I have never heard of the Bastille, maybe could do that this weekend, though I was only hoping to run 8.

Good luck with the training!

Re: Crim 10 Miler - August 26, 2006 - Flint, Michigan
thanks again Lynne for the info, i stopped to pick up a pair of wave rider 9's from Bauman's (don't tell Complete Runner) but they didn't have any in so guess i have to wait a week or two and was told to just show up and run on the 13th too. ran the Bastille 5k today in Fenton, hot, humid and hilly = a slow time (22:59) but at least the others felt it too because i was 5th out of 17...ok, because the winner AND masters winner where from my AG, i was really 7/19, but that's much better then my usual middle of the pack for me. figure out if you are doing the Mt. Morris poker run yet? i'm leaning toward it now just to get the extra miles in.

Lynne, I'm thinking about running the Turri (sp?) but only the 5K version. Was it hills that hurt your knees or something else?

Thanks, Mark

Re: Crim 10 Miler - August 26, 2006 - Flint, Michigan
I most definately might run the Crim. I have registered but recently my training has been rather, shall I say, sporadic lately. I could bail out depending on the weather. (which I think is contributing to my current running slump) If the weather is like this (upper 90's) I know there will be a whole lot of walk breaks. Pathetic thing about that is I'm rather slow anyway.

Well, I used to be faster but don't expect anything near 90 minutes (unless I take a shortcut). Since I haven't run it in over 10 years and just started running again in April..... I'm expecting to finish in over 2 hours. I'm just doing it to do it and finish. The 10K I did a couple weeks ago was a 12:30 average pace. In my heyday, I used to train on the Crim course or parts of it like you a few times before the race. I've never run the Bastille. Actually, my next race may be the Poker Challege 12K in Mt. Morris on August 5 but not sure about that yet. This heat has taken a toll on my training but I'd rather have the heat now than race day. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Mark: I've had to wait for my shoes at Bauman's, too, in the past but it's worth the wait..... to get the shoes you really like. Good job on the Bastille. I'm sure the heat took it's toll on everyone. I was hoping for a long training run Saturday but just did not have it in me and quit around 4.5 miles. I went out around 6:00 a.m. and tshirt was more wet than dry. I can imagine how hot it was at your race time. I would like to run that race sometime tho. Maybe next year. Oh, the Tuuri..... when I was in shape and faster, I ran the 10K and thought the hills were brutal (worse than the Bradley's or up Third Avenue). My knees ached for a week or two after the race. I vowed never to do the 10K again so switched to the 5K. But if you've never done the 10K you might want to try it and make that decision next year for yourself. If I remember correctly, the 10K starts an hour earlier than the 5K..... maybe even 7:30. That's a big bonus. The 10K is a great race tho.

Anachrotech: The weather is effecting me, too, but it'll pass. I put you on the list. We can always blame the weather if we're slower than we hoped .

Lynne,

Good luck finishing, even that can be a challenge in the heat, hills and humidity!! I have heard the Tuuri will have a different course this year because of some roadwork... not sure if it's true, I haven't been able to confirm or deny.

I still haven't decided if I want to run a tuneup race. I am one of those cheapskates that would rather run for free wherever and whenever I want, except for the Crim.

I did find an interesting possibility though, it's a trail race called The Legend, located in Sleepy Hollow State Park near Lainsburg. It's on August 5th, so I have 3 weeks to recover instead of 2!!

Good luck to all the CRIM (Cool Runners In Michigan) running the CRIM.

Re: Crim 10 Miler - August 26, 2006 - Flint, Michigan
This is the second or third time I've seen a warning about the Bradley Hills, first about third strret. I think I'll drive third tomorrow, but where are the Bradley Hills located?
As tough as the three H's where for me, I can't imagine what it was like for the 15K runners last saturday. Not only that, but they do it over 2 minutes faster per mile too! Man, I can only hope to be able to cover 15k at my 5k pace in a few years.
Anyone know where to get some of those sports jelly beans? I can't handle the GU anymore, at least I don't want to have to if possible. Thanks! Mark

Re: Crim 10 Miler - August 26, 2006 - Flint, Michigan
The Bradley Hills are located on Bradley Avenue, though I'm not exactly sure where on Bradley, maybe someone else can be a bit more precise?

Though, I have to admit, I've never thought the Bradley hills were THAT bad, especially compared to the Run Thru ****. Also, I ran the 15K Bastille on Saturday, and those hills were a lot more challenging. I don't know where the 5K course went, so I'm not sure how to compare it to the Crim. I'm trying to say that I don't think you need to worry too much, though driving the course is never a bad idea!

I'm not sure where to get the sport beans, you may be able to order them online. No one should have to suffer with the GU, though!

Re: Crim 10 Miler - August 26, 2006 - Flint, Michigan
I've done the Crim the last 3 years and plan on doing it again this year. About the hills, I'd heard of the dreaded "Bradley Hills" for several years before my first Crim. My normal training route has some hills and I threw in some extra ones before my first Crim. I didn't think the hills were too bad. Therefore, the second year, I didn't run any extra hills in preparation. I was surprised to find that in the intervening year they had made the hills much higher. For my third Crim, I did some extra hills in preparation and it again wasn't too bad. They'd lowered the hills again. I hope to see some of you in Flint.

Re: Crim 10 Miler - August 26, 2006 - Flint, Michigan
All, thanks for the info.
NPrun, I must bow before you in that you ran the 15K on Saturday. I heard that the 15K was harder (besides being 3X longer) then the 5K. It seemed I was running up or down the whole race so I don't want to know what you went through. My daily runs have a few small hills and I usually don't mind them at all, but for some reason, Saturdays race seemed really hard.
GHealthy, I think I'm going to squeeze in the Ophellia 8K(sp?) tomorrow evening to work on speed (if a 7:30 pace can be considered speed) and then MAYBE try the 5k Turri on Saturday.
GU is one of those energy packets that are thick like white glue but they don't taste nearly as good as old Elmers, no matter how much water you drink with it.
