Portland for a day

I'll be staying in Portland for a night/day and then heading down to Silver Falls State Park for the weekend. I would like to get a morning run in while in Portland. I saw in RW magazine the Leif Erickson Drive Forest park area. Can anyone tell me if it is close to La Quinta Inn NW on NW Yeon? Thanks.

I'm not sure where La Quinta is on Yeon, but Thurman isn't far from Yeon. Go south to Thurman, head uphill on Thurman until it ends. The unpaved continuation of Thurman on the other side of the gate is Leif.

If you're driving there you should probably just go all the way to the gate and make a (somewhat ugly) three-point turn and drive back down until you find a parking spot. Generally the other people on Lief have parked along Thurman for several blocks down hill.

Depending on how far you want to run, you could probably run up to Thurman, but it would be a mile or two each way and that would just subtract from time on Lief, which will be more pleasant. Lief Erickson is about 11 miles each way so you probably won't find it too short.

There is a water fountain and good map just at the gate/entrance of Lief, and a porto-john about 1/4 mile in. Sometimes there's also a john at 3.25, but if you need it, it won't be there.

Have fun.
