I'm still here. I went down to the Silver Comet Saturday for a 4-mile run. I parked at the Mavell Rd trail head and ran up to the Bike Shop, where the Silver Comet Half Marathon was finishing up. I got there a few minutes after a friend finished, so I made him drive me back to my truck. It was a beautiful day for a run, but I haven't trained enough to go 13 miles, so I didn't enter. I am training for the Museum of Aviation Half in January, though. I ran that one in about 2 hrs 15 min last year. I think I can get under 2 hrs 10 min this year. I've been very slow for the past year, but I think I can do it.

My family is in Milledgeville, so I'll be there for Thanksgiving. I'm hoping to find a 5K to run that morning. Does anyone know of a race down that way? I've run Thanksgiving Day races for the past two years (Canton and Marietta), and I really like starting the day that way, so I hope I can find one reasonably close to my parents' house.

I love the Warner Robins 1/2 marathon. Don't know if I'll make it this year as I'm running a marathon Feb 17 but I might make it down. I ran 1:47 last year doing 30 second walk breaks every mile.

I had an Aunt who spent some time at the Milledgeville mental hospital back in the 60's. They swear her and I are very similar to each mother so I may visit your fair town someday. .

JDJ

There is a trail marathon and 50K in Milledgeville the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It's run at Bartram Forest and is a loop course. If you didn't want to run an entire marathon you could just knock out a few of the 5 1/4 mile loops.

I did just four loops last year preparing for a marathon. Helped having company.

770 - I actually used to work out at Central State Hospital, while I was in school at Georgia College. It's a pretty nice campus, and there's room to run a little if they'll let you out. I think you'll like it there.

truckin - While I was still living in Milledgeville I used to go out and run that Bartram Forest loop every now and then. It's a great place to run. I also used to take my mountain bike out there sometimes. There's a 13-mile loop that I used to like, but the last time I went they had half of it fenced off. Bummer. Still, when I'm in Milledgeville, I do like to go out to Bartram Forest and run. Unfortunately, I'm working the Saturday after Thanksgiving, so I'll miss the marathon and 50K.

By the way, Bartram Forest is right across the street from one end of the Central State Hospital campus, so 770, you might get to run there, too!

So who's running Brasstown Bald?

I've kind of ran Brasstown Bald the past two years. The year before last I walked more than ran. Last year I ran more than walked. I may do it again this year. I'll have to do some hill training real soon, though.

I've always wanted to do that race, but it's the same day as the Jacksonville marathon this year. Maybe next year?

Just keeping the thread close to the top.

I'm planning a few 5K's in the next two weeks. This afternoon in Kennesaw, I'm going to try to find my way to the Legacy Run. Then Thursday the Gobblejog in Marietta (that one is a lot of fun). Next I think will be the Reindeer Run/Santa Stroll in Macon.

I'm thinking about running the Carpet Capital 10-Miler in Dalton on Dec 8th. I ran in their inaugural 5K two years ago, but I don't know much about the course beyond the first mile and a half. Anyone know anything about it?

I'm running the gobble jog on Thurs. too. Any other fun races coming up that you know of? I've done a few that were not so much fun.

The Gobblejog 5K was great, as expected. It was raining that morning, but stopped shortly before the race started. That was good, but I would have run in the rain. I ran the exact same time I ran the Legacy Park 5K run in last Saturday, 28:48. I'm still pretty happy with that time, though, because at the 2-mile marker it was still elbow to elbow and my time was 19:50. I ran the third mile in 8:33. That's the best mile I've run this year, and if I can keep that up, I'll get close to my PR time. It looks like the hill sprints are starting to pay off for me.

I was planning to go down to Macon for the Santa Stroll, but I've decided to save gas and run in the Sweet Tomatoes 5K in Kennesaw instead. The course description says "rolling to flat." Well, I know the area and there's a monster hill right there. I don't know how they can avoid that hill without making us cross Barrett Parkway, so I'm expecting it to be tough.

If you're looking for a fun race, think about the Brasstown Baldbuster. It's not a bad race. There's one hill, though. It starts right at the beginning and ends, well, right at the finish, but once you get over the hill, the rest is a piece of cake. It's a lot of fun. There are only overall winners awards; no age group awards, but everyone who finishes gets something. Last year it was a medallion. The year before a tile. You get sweatshirts instead of t-shirts, too. I've gone the last two years, but I don't know if I'll go back this year.

Good work JDJ. It was crowded and I don't doubt you could have gone faster if it hadn't been. My 5K times have been up to a minute slower in really crowded races. It was a good race. Warm enough and well organized despite a curious lack of port-a-johns.

Mixed bag for me. Course for the 10K was a double loop of the 5K. Rolling hills with one significant hill from 1-2 and again from 4-5. Thought I was in shape to run 42 to qualify for the 1A group at Peachtree. Hit the 5K in 20:50, right on target, but lost ground going up the hill the second time. Finished in 42:45. Guess I wasn't quite ready after all. Good effort though considering I'm coming off a significant injury.

The 5K in the Highlands on the 22nd looks like a good race. 9:00 start (always a plus) and you get a santa hat if you register early. Can't beat that!

Thanks ATL. You really helped me out yesterday. I ran in the Sweet Tomatoes 5K in Kennesaw. I decided on the way to the race that I was going to push myself to see if I could run a fast time. There were about 400 runners, so it was a little crowded for the first mile. I kept making these little bursts to get around people and then slowing down, getting blocked again, so I thought that would hurt my time. At the first mile marker, I was at 8:14, a great time for me. I was only a few seconds slower at the second mile marker, so I started thinking maybe I could PR. I just needed to maintain my pace. I started thinking to myself "good work JDJ," so thanks ATL for the encouragement. At the third mile marker, I was at 25:26. My PR was 26:26, so I had a full minute to finish the last tenth. I ended up at 26:06, beating my old PR by 20 seconds! How's that for someone who hasn't run a fast race in over a year!

About the Gobblejog, they do something a little different with the port-a-johns for that race. On the street where they were checking people in (I believe that's the north side of the square), there is a narrow road that isn't much wider than an alley. They line that road with port-a-johns, about 30 of them. They've done that both times that I've run the race. I guess you just have to know where they are.

42:45 for a 10K. All I have to do is cut about 14 minutes off my 10K PR and I'll be right there with ya!

I'm thinking about the Carpet Capital 10-Miler next weekend. If I do it, it'll just be a training run for me. I'll want to finish in under 100 minutes.

I haven't found anything on the highlands race. Does anyone have a link?

Thank you for the kind words JDJ, but I don't deserve any credit. You were out running the race while I was sitting around drinking my morning coffee. In my experience, all the weaving and surging you have to do to get around people in a crowded race takes a lot of energy. Who knows, maybe you've got another PR in you if you can find a race where you don't have to do that. Or move up to the front!

Here's the link for the highlands 5K. Looks like it will be a good size. They're capping it at 1000.
