Basically - putting a little yogurt or fresh fruit in a smoothie maker with a measured amount of whey protein isn't too bad. A little ice to make it cold and you will soon get used to it. I only drink a protein shake every other day or so, maybe 3-4 a week.

I highly recommend Parillo protein powder, vanilla flavor. It's very vanilla, and thrown into the blender with ice is almost a vanilla milkshake. You can dress it up (banana extract and a pack of Splenda is great) and/or add fruit for a great smoothie. For a little extra calcium, add low fat milk instead of part of the water. I buy it through a fitness trainer but you can get it on line easily.

Muscle Milk Cookies and Cream is really good and doesnt need a blender, just a shaker cup. Also if you are more of a vanilla type, try peeling a banana, slicing it up and freezing it. Use the frozen fruit instead of ice to make a smoothe.

IsoPure - grape is my favorite. I buy the bottles versus the powder. I tried the powder and it made me gag. I am a picky eater and I can't stand anything that tastes milky or chalky in texture. Grape IsoPure is my favorite for a great source of protein with very few calories.

I am a vegan & a marathoner and though I prefer to get my protein from Whole Foods, I live the busy life most of us do. Clif Bar's Builder Bars have 20g protein per bar and taste great! They come in Peanut Butter, Chocolate, & Cookies-n-Cream. Beans are great sources of protein, as are nuts/nut butters, but watch the fat in those.

as a personal trainer i always tell my clients (especially the vegetarians) that even just to be healty and athletic you absolutely must make sure you get a decent amount of protein daily. whether you're trying to tone or build lean muscle mass i recommend anywhere from .5 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight accordingly.

there are at least two brands of protein shakes (power form) that i can personally recommend and that i often suggest to my clients with good results. they both offer around 30g of protein, very few carbs and they don't taste awful. VPX Micellean comes in many flavors (just avoid the graham cracker, it's gritty and doesn't taste as good as the others) and is available at most specialty vitamin or supplement retailers. Met-Rx Protein Plus comes in chocolate and vanilla and i buy it at Trader Joe's, but i'm sure it can be found elsewhere. The directions tell you to use 3 scoops, i recommend only two which gives you around 25-30g of protein per shake.

obviously whole sources of good lean protein are the best choice, but supplementation is the way to go if you can't always have it. i hope i this information helps!

Nature's Plus SPIRU-TEIN (soy protein powder) tastes awesome! Comes in several flavors, but vanilla is our favorite. I just mix with milk - but can add fruit or whatever. Having steak for breakfast isn't too appetizing for vegetarians. I also don't like milk, but the shakes are just that good. And I also won't eat anything that tastes bad, but this is so good my 11 year old daughter (also a triathlete) demands a shake after every workout. I get it at Central Market (in Austin, Texas), but just googled it and found lots of listings. Also comes in whey protein - didn't know that.

I follow the Zone Perfect nutrition plan, and enjoy/love their vanilla and chocolate shakes, they are low in calories (about 200) and contain a balanced ratio of carbs/protein/fat (about 20/10/5 grams each respectively). They are sweet, but naturally, and low in sugar. I use them every morning post-run/workouts, and mix them with Silk lite vanilla soymilk but they can mixed w/ plain water as the directions indicate. Enjoy!

A QUICK IDEA FOR PROTEIN SHAKES:

One scoop of any vanilla-flavor whey protein is around 20 grams (should be protein only, and maybe 1 gram of fat and a few grams of carbs per serving)

Add this in a blender to a cup of skim milk, a banana, and a handful of frozen strawberries.

Add a spoonful of honey if you want more sweetness/added sugar (great post-workout)!

That smoothie has about 300 calories: 30 grams protein, 50-60 grams of carbs, and no fat (maybe a little from the protein).
Adjust the amounts if you want less calories. for example, leave out the honey or use half-banana to cut back on carbs, or use water instead of milk to cut about 100 calories.

For a protein shake, try the Pro Score 100 from Champion Nutrition in chocolate. Minimal carbs but lots of aminos, and flavor! Add what you like. I also keep a couple cans of tuna with me--just open the can, drain, and you get approx. 15 grams. Happy training, Lois.

my favorite: 100% whey protein from GNC, several flavors are available, use two or three scoops, add a scoop of ground flax seed for omega oil and to slow digestion, a piece of fruit, and a scoop of ground oatmeal if desired. Put in a blender with water or skim milk. This is breakfast, tastes good, no extra honey or sugar needed, loaded with protein, and because the raw ground flax seed slows digestion you won't feel hungry again for several hours.
