Re: Raleigh, NC Runners 2007!!!!!!!!!
I've been late in thanking NCRC for putting on a great (and hot) August running series in Umstead Park. Well-organized group runs, door prizes, post-run water and Gatorade -- done very well and a lot fun for everyone (averaging about 40 runners a week).

Give serious thought to coming out to the new NCRC September series, running on Raleigh's Crabtree Creek greenway each Thursday night. No charge, just show up and run. All the details are at http://www.ncroadrunners.org/Series/septemberseries.pdf[/URL" target="_blank">.

Re: Raleigh, NC Runners 2007!!!!!!!!!
Your welcome. It was definetly the hottest Aug series yet, but everyone had a good time. We had between 43 and 60 runners every week and despite the heat some impressive times were posted each week on a tough course.

I'm sure Olga and Josh will do a finejob with the Sept series and I look forward to running and let someone else do the work.

Re: Raleigh, NC Runners 2007!!!!!!!!!
Hi all,

I need to start trail running at Umstead to train for the 50 miler in April 2008.
I've never been there, so I have no clue of which areas are safe/good for Sunday runs. This upcoming Sunday, I have a 10-12 miler on schedule. So, I will appreciate if you guys can give me some feedback:

1) What's safe at am on a Sunday (I am assuming there will be a ton of people biking and running)
2) What's the best loop or double loop for that distance?
3) What is relativelly rolling hills, instead of steep/heavy hills? (I am coming back from a nasty injury and need to keep the hills not as agressive right now).

Thanks in advance

TY

The entire park is safe at all times of day. I've never had any trouble with the cyclists. The bike/bridle trails are plenty wide and the park is huge ... it's never been what I'd call "crowded" by any stretch of the imagination. However, if you want to avoid cyclists, show up early. You'll start to see the cyclists show up after 8:30 AM or so, getting heavier as the morning wears on.

In any case, the cyclists/horses are restricted to the bike/bridle trails. You can always run the single track stuff and there the only thing you'll have to worry about is families/dog walkers typically later in the day (and still not a problem).

There are so many options, I don't know what to recommend. You haven't said if you wanted to run single-track or not, or where you are likely to park (common entrances are the two parking lots, Graylyn, and the Ready Creek "West Gate"). Here's a map with fairly accurate distances:

Reedy Creek is probably the gentlest of the bike/bridle trails with only one significantly steep hill (cemetery hill), but that's a short hill. Graylyn and the Reedy Creek spur up to the Harrison lot are probably the next steepest. Turkey Creek Trail (esp N Turkey Creek) is probably the most aggressive bike/bridle trail, so avoid that one initially. :-)

As for single track, Company Mill isn't too bad. The initial descent from the Harrison Parking lot to the loop portion is kinda steep, the rest is fairly gentle except for one or two short climbs (as I recall... I don't run single track there much).

For this weekend, you could park at the Reedy Creek neighborhood entrance (go north on Reedy Creek road off of Weston Parkway and park just before the bridge which goes over 40). Then do an out and back on Reedy Creek Trail. That will give you about 10 miles.

For longer runs, I like to park at N Cary Park:

Then take the Blackcreek Greenway into Umstead. From N Cary Park to the West Gate entrance is a little over two miles.

BTW - if you're looking for a flat bike/bridle trail of similar surface to Umstead, consider the ATT in Wake County. That's where I run when I want to give my achilles a break.

HTH.

Sorry, I totally misinterpreted the "what's safe" question to mean "will I have any problem with cyclists running me over" as opposed to "do I need to worry about getting mugged or worse...".

Re: Raleigh, NC Runners 2007!!!!!!!!!
Tks jasoffian and JDF! Awesome input! I copied all the info and will def take a look at the map I JUST got from the race package

I am a 35 yo female. I am mainly a road runner, and this will be my first trail run. As safety, my main concern is about to run by myself early in the morning. But 7:15 sounds reasonable, although I was planning on 6:30.

Now, the newbiest question. If the park only officially opens at 8am, I just need to park my car outside and walk in? I thought people were not allowed in before or after park hours...

Re: Raleigh, NC Runners 2007!!!!!!!!!
The official response is that the park is only open during the park hours. I was once stopped by a park ranger and informed of such. He let me finish my run (This was in the winter when it ws dark out and I had a headlamp on). The reality is that people run in the park before and after park hours. They don't regularly patrol that I am aware of. They are probably concerned more with liability a night in the dark then they are in the morning when it is light out. During the summer there are often a number of vehicles parked just outside the gate before the park officially opens.
