The body was about 100 yards off the trail by a lake. I'll guess that it someone who had walked off the main trail down to an inner lake to fish and then left this place due to natural causes. The trail is actually quite safe this time of year. Visibility is good, unlike August when the wild grasses and plants will grow high. They do controlled burns -- similar to the days when natural fires would act to thin out the area.

That also makes it the best time of year to spot deer who come out closer to the edges looking for food. I had a standoff one morning with 6 deer on the middle on the trail ahead of me. I stopped, not wanting to scare them and unsure what they would do. They all stood there looking at me, perhaps contemplating where they would go next.

I'm always wondering if I'll find a dead body since I frequently run in a forested area. Pretty creepy thought, I know. I watch the news too much!

Glad that turned out okay and wasn't a murder. We don't need those out here in DuPage!

It is really sad that the Scenic 10 is going away. I grew up in Park Forest from birth till I was 25. The scenic was always a staple event for the town. It is sad to see what has become of a once nice town. I have never had a chance to run it, but I remember my summers off from college preparing the route with the public works dept. Just a really sad statement for a town that is slowly dying.

Glad to hear nothing fishy about the Springbrook ordeal. My prayers to the man they found and his family.

Chris

cdryjanski,

Could you elaborate on what has been happening in Park Forest? I've noticed a couple minor things, like the mall where the race starts and finishes is mostly empty; but was not aware there were general problems there. "Slowly dying" sounds pretty serious.

About Park Forest,
What I have seen is a once great town slowly just falling apart. The mall is the least of the troubles. Park Forest use to be a great intergrated middle class community. In the 1950's a book titled Orginization Man" was wrote about how the town was the realization of the post war U.S integrated mixed income etc. Sadly the town now has little to no economic base. Most middle class people are leaving. Sadly the whole town is becoming slowly like what Harvey was Robbins etc. Meaning no tax base from business, I sadly think racial divide is creeping in as well. There is a slow diteration of what it was. I drive through on occasion past my old house and no one lives there any more the houses are ill kept, dead or un mowed lawns. Add to that the infrastructure going south as well. I learned of all those problems working summers at public works. It is just sad to see a town that had great festivals and events at one time fall apart. The Scenic 10 was probably the last major even left and now well nothing. I am a little criticle of the town since I grew up there and got a BA in sociology studying what a great experiment it was, and to now look at what it is.

Sorry for the lengthy reply that has little to do with running

Does anyone know if the Soldier Field 10 mile sells out?

I'm just getting back into running after a years worth of being injured. The longest I've EVER RUN is 8 miles, so I think it may be way to soon for me to run the whole thing but if I could make it close to the distance I'd be willing to run/walk it. So I was wondering if it sells out. Don't want to sign up now and then not even be able to do it....

I'm doing the Shamrock Shuffle this weekend. Then the CPD Memorial 5K run (http://www.cpdmemorial.org/run/) in May. Maybe Grandma's marathon and then the Heartland 100 miler in October. And the Chicago marathon of course.

I'm a Northside runner, get on the Lakepath at North Avenue.

citydude - I'm in the city. Bucktown/Wicker Park area. Not a baseball fan though. Hockey is my sport and I am originally from Montreal, so I hate the Hawks.

The Shuffle was one of the most fun races I have ever done. ! I finished way in the back of the pack, but I hadn't run more than a 5K before that day, so it isn't like I trained to do the whole thing. i was planning on walking some of it, but the crowd, and bon jovi got me through (I never would have thought you give love a bad name was a good running tune!)

I run the path sometimes but I more start at Montrose or Larry...

Just signed up for the Chicago Marathon again. It will be my 5th and it's the 30th anniversary! I can't wait! But I need to be thinking about Boston right now!

Is anyone else running Chicago? I was worried to wait to sign up since it filled so quickly last year.
