Charleston in August

I'll be in Charleston SC in a couple of weeks, and will need to get in 8 miles on Saturday morning. 2 Questions:

How early in the morning should I plan on running. The last time I ran there in the summer it was brutal!

I'll need a nice route. I don't know the city well enough yet, so any help would be great.

Thanks!

Re: Charleston in August
hi mrsq,
I was in Charleston for a long 4th of July weekend last month, and the heat and humidity was brutal . . . and I went to college in North Carolina and live in D.C., so I thought I knew heat and humidity. I found that if I didn't finish my runs by 8am I was not too happy. The earlier you can get out there, the better.

That said, it's a gorgeous town. . . loved running through and seeing the architecture. A route I took several times was one that wound through the historical downtown district and then went across the Arthur Ravenel Bridge. It's a great route-- the Arthur Ravenel Bridge is over 2 miles long I think (goes over to Mt. Pleasant), and from there you have a great view of everything. Encountered lots of runners, walkers, and cyclists on the bridge.

I was staying near the corner of Lockwood and Broad St, so ran down Broad, over Meeting, down Calhoun, over East Bay, onto the bridge, across, and back the same route . . . think it was a bit more than 9 miles, but don't remember exactly. Have fun!
