Pain on back side of knee, not kneecap

Hey all,

Lately I've had pain on the back side of my knee. No, not under my knee cap, but the actual back side of my knee in the fleshy part between the tendons. I don't feel it when I'm exercising but later, say... by the time I get home from the gym (10 - 15 minutes).

Any thoughts or suggestions on how to deal with this. I did have knee surgery several years ago.... Hmmmm....

Melissa

Re: Pain on back side of knee, not kneecap
I have been training for a marathon for 18 weeks (it is this Sunday) and started experiencing the same pain about 4 weeks ago. Found out it was my poplietus muscle (right behind knee). I wasn't doing enough stretching before and after my runs. Now I ice and stretch 2-3 times a day. It connects to the hamstring so unfortunately I have major pain there as well. Once I get done with this marathon...I think I need to take some time to rest it.

Good luck!

I also am just about done getting over a popliteus injury. It is hard to stretch but responds very well to massage. I massage it myself a couple of times a day. It was very painful to run through the first week or so but by staying away from significant hills I was able to run through it just fine. Just keep kneading it, stretch your calves and hamstrings and take it easy with the hills and it should clear up.

Good luck!
