plantar fasciitis and cold weather link?

So no PF until 2 weeks ago when I run my first ½ marathon (outside temperature 17F). When I finished the outer side of my left arch hurt. Symptoms very similar to PF but not the heel, and it hurt for almost a week. By the way I have flat feet and it hurt more when I walked wearing arch support orthotics, and the pain went away when I stood on my flat foot.

So 10 days later I went for a 6-mile training run, 33F degrees, no problem, no pain.

Yesterday a race 4 miles (temperature 14F degrees) and after mile 3 the pain came back. Actually is worse walking than running.

So linking dots: could be the cold, the harder pounding in a race, both, neither?

Planning to run another ½ marathon this Sunday but afraid the pain could make me quit mid-race.

My PF started right after a race that took place during a cold torrential rain storm. I stepped in a huge puddle, it was very cold out. I stood around waiting for friends to finish the race, a long ride home, etc. Needless to say, my feet were cold and wet for a while. I could hardly walk later that day. In my case, I think it had something to do with the elements. Sounds like you've made some sort of correlation is your situation. Good luck!

I"m not sure I understand where it hurts. Is it on the outside of your foot? If so, it's more likely the peroneal tendon instead of PF. If the arch support hurts your foot may be twisting from too much support? Just a guess.

By your description, sounds like your outer metatarsal. I bruised mine once on a run - It hurt for 2 weeks then gone. I later found out that the pain could have been serious like a broken bone. (Information from when I attended a marathoners' injury prevention class. )

You may have bruised your bone or worse. Be careful.

From your discussion you may have weak ankles from injuries over the years - you may want to wrok on ankle strenthening exercises so you don't reinjure.

I've never linked my PF to cold, but have found that running outside on hard pavement, even easy aggravates it more than running hard on my treadmill. I haven't been outdoors for a month.

Doesn't it take longer for your muscles to relax and stretch out in the cold?

The fascia is linked to your calf. If you have a tight calf then you will put extra strain on your PF.
