Femoral neck stfx 3 months no improvement!!!

Hi, i am a 20 year old runner, just diagnosed with femoral neck stfx. Thought it was adductor tear for 3 months, just had an mri and bone scan and learned about the stress fracture. MRI said slight fracture, bone marrow edema swelling....I cannot run or play tennis at all. Biking and sleeping are the only nonpainful things. Any suggestions? How long do these take to heal? Do calcium supplements help?

Re: Femoral neck stfx 3 months no improvement!!!
I am 25 yrs. old and was diagnosed with this same injury a year ago after running my second half-marathon. Please listen to your doctor's orders precisely b/c this sort of stress fracture is more severe than most. Not to scare you, but I had a pretty bad experience. I was on crutches for six weeks post-diagnosis with absolutely no activity. I didn't listen and rode the bike a few times and also walked short distances around my house without the crutches. At the six week mark the stress fracture was a complete hairline fracture and I went in for surgery two days later. They placed 3 pins in my hip to stablize the bones. Anyway, recovery was hard and I was on crutches for 5 months total. However, I am doing really well now. My surgery was almost a year ago and I have been training for another half-marathon! I am running in the Austin half next weekend. This is the very same weekend last year I found out I had to have surgery so I am going to go celebrate the fact that I can walk, better yet run this year! Please be very careful and feel free to email me if you need to talk to someone.

Take my word for it, get on crutches-I had the same injury and cheated a ton with my crutches so just got an MRI THIRTEEN MONTHS later and am back on crutches-for about 6 weeks as my fem neck sf has never healed.

I was told no biking as well-if it is still hurting, I would not do anything but swim-

Learn from my mistakes, cause they sure got me into a lot of trouble! )

Good luck

Had this diagnoses at 39 years old thru an MRI (41 now). 6 weeks on crutches with little to no cheating, slow come back low mileage, slowly building up and consistent strength training - but now run faster and completed my 1st marathon this past fall so my advice is follow Dr.'s instructions as depressing as it is to stop all activity. try to be patient - you may come back a stronger and better runner.

I would be looking at why a healthy 20 y.o. would be getting a stress fracture. In other words, you are probably not getting the right nutrition to be healthy. TE (Total Effort) that posts on this site sustained a serious toe fracture from dropping a microwave on it. The ER saw him and sent him right away to an ortho. Two days later the doc took x-rays (comminuted fx I believe) and told him to come back in a week.

One week later he retakes the x-rays...and stares at them...and stares again...and says "all healed". Total fx of toe healed within 9 days.

TE will tell you that he double-dosed on all of his supplements...try this:

Cod Liver Oil - 2 tsps per day
Zinc - 100 mg per day
Cal/Mag - 1/1 ratio maybe 500/500
L-Glutamine - get the powdered and take at least 3 heaping tsps per day

Eat only whole unprocessed foods and get a lot of sleep.

Good luck!

Re: Femoral neck stfx 3 months no improvement!!!
I was diagnosed with a femoral head stfx in August. I'm 29, and was training for my second marathon at the time. My dr. and I discussed WHY I got the fracture, and basically concluded that it was overuse (not enough time off after my first M) and not enough Ca. I followed her instructions EXACTLY. My stfx was on the compression side, which is a little bit easier to heal. I was allowed minimal walking for 4 weeks (no crutches), biking, swimming and aquajogging were fine. After 4 weeks I was allowed to start walking more. After 7 weeks I got the slow re-introduction to running (run/walk) for another 3 weeks - that sucked. I felt ok and wanted to run, or I felt a twinge and panicked.

I'm now running ~55 mpw and haven't felt a thing in the region since Oct. or Nov. I AM taking Ca++ supplements and generally paying more attention to getting Ca++ through my diet.

YOU can get better, but not if you rush it.

How is your relationship with your doctor? I would talk to him/her about it. When I was given the go ahead to start running (or rather run/walking) I did have some pain - twinges, not quite right feelings. My dr. assured me that this was normal, and even to be expected. I had good days where I felt nothing, and bad days where the region ached a little after the run. She needed me to be honest about the pain, but she said that on a scale of 1-10(high), 1-2 was normal, but if it were worse, then that would be a problem.

The comeback was slow, though. I wasn't allowed to just go run 7 mi. like I wanted to. I think the Pfitzinger plan for coming back from a long injury is good. The plan that my doctor and I worked out was a little faster than that, but it was ok for me.

I hope this is helpful.
