meniscus tear # two

Hey folks: i am new to this but was turned on to the site by a long time member. I am a 30-35 year recreational runner pushing 50, who has suffered what is "quickly" diagnosed as a second meniscus tear in right knee. thefirst was in 2000, i also did the left knee in 2003, the surgeon did an X-ray that showed mild arthritis, but no cartilage and said that an MRI would not show much, they promptly signed me up for surgery on march 2nd , as wellas informing me i need to stop running and do stairmaster or something else. ........ to put it mildly i am not ready or willing to hang up my shoes, the doc. did not respond favoribly to the suggestion of meniscus replacement . i am trying to get a second opinion as to options or replacement , but that would be on march 1st and i would have to reschedule surgerysoooooooo.. ANXIETY is the word of the week and i am searching for help
Has anyone out there been thru two meniscus surgerys on the same knee and come back to run???? Also has anyone had a replacement meniscus surgery , and if so how did it go .
Sorry to be so lengthy, but i am fairy freaked out by things , anyone who can relate i would really, really appreciate hearing from. many thanx

Wish I could help, but all I can offer is sympathy. I don't find as many runners who are as addicted as I am(meaning that I get "freaked out" by the prospect of giving it up altogether, as you mentioned). I am also a 30-yr veteran of recreational running, and I am now down to a shuffle/hobble. I have a different problem on each knee, and had a tumble this winter which may have torn a meniscus, so I'll be watching your "case". I am presently starting to get anxious as it seems I've reached, through continued shuffling, another level of injury(more acute pain), and perhaps a completely debilitating one.

Don't ya just hate it when the docs(or friends) say stupid things like," Well, just try swimming!" I could seriously end up in a mental hospital with a prognosis of no running(shuffling)! And at this point I have been completely unable to do any biking, weight-training, elliptical, stairs....all from a former 2-hr a day exerciser.

Best of luck

marci

Hey chester, I've had a locked bucket handle tear in my left knee that had me in a wheel chair for two months and the only way to fix it was to have a portion of it removed. I also had an ACL replacement in the same knee (Aug 05) that had me off work for 5 months and I ended up getting a blood clot in my lung. My OS told me that it wasn't a good idea to run in April/06 and I ran a 5k in May. Shortly after that I changed to cycling and I just hung up the bike about 3 weeks ago because of the icy roads. Now my thighs are really strong and it's because of their strength that I am able to run. I have signed up for my first half marathon in May and I run 4-5 times per week. You may want to consider another sport for awhile to strengthen you legs. Perhaps that may help. I know that it may not be exactly what you want to hear, but there are ways of proving the nay-sayers wrong.....if you do it the right way. Best of luck.

Hey chester,

I had a pretty significant knee injury when I was 16, 2 years ago. I tore my ACL and meniscus in my right knee. They replace my ACL with a piece of my hamstring and were going to just smooth out my meniscus. But, when they got in there the surgeon decided they couldnt save it so they cut it all out.

They say I'll have arthritis by the time I am 25 since there is no cushion between the bones in my right knee. They also said I'd never make it back to 100% but I'm well on my way there. I might look into a meniscus replacement eventually but for now I'm dealing with it and my knee doesn't give me much trouble at all. Just when theres a pressure change in the atmosphere, like when its hot and then get really cold.

Good luck!

I was in a car accident 24 years ago. I broke both of my hips, my pelvis, my right heel, my right ankle, and the cartilage on my left knee was cut. I was in traction for 6 weeks....then a wheelchair, a walker, crutches, and eventually back on my own two feet.

The docs told me I'd never walk without a noticeable limp, and I would not be able to run again. They also told me I'd be looking at arthritis and hip replacments by the time I was 35.

Well....I didn't listen to them AT ALL! I was a runner then, and I still am - 27 years of running, which includes 3 marathons and dozens of half marathon, and countless 10Ks and 5Ks.

Oh sure, I have some aches and pains that are becoming more noticeable, and I am getting a little arthritis (I'm 48). I don't have a limp, and overall I feel GREAT!

Now, the problem is my left knee needs arthroscopic surgery to repair (as much as possible) a rough meniscus and patella. My OS (also) said NO MORE RUNNING...ugh! He said maybe a couple miles on a treadmill ocassionally, but that should be it!

SO, I definitely feel your pain. I'm looking to get a second opinion from a sports doc, and I'll be pushing for some physical therapy.

I'm happy to do some cross-training because I've always enjoyed lots of different things...but give up running??? NOPE! That's why I'm having this surgery in the first place...so I can CONTINUE!!

Our doctors just don't know how TOUGH we are! We need to be smart about this, for sure, and take the steps to ease back into our running, listen to our bodies when they tell us to step back, but give it up?? That's just CRAZY TALK :-)

Since you have had recurring problems, I think you should get some advice from a sports physician and some physical therapists. They usually understand the need and can assist you in creating a rehabilitation program that will get you back out there, if AT ALL POSSIBLE.

Good luck and take care! Keep us posted.
Pat :-)
