Hip pain question

I have been trying to train for Boston and have developed a hip injury. It started as stiffness in both hips, then settled into one and got worse.

The pain seems to originate from the soft tissue that goes over my hip bone; if I press on the area above the shallowed out part of the outside of my hip bone, it hurts a lot. Some pain radiates down into my quad. I cannot run without pain and a pronounced limp. There is some pain if I lift up my leg with a bent knee, esp if there is weight on my leg ( lifting up leg with ski boot/ski). It does not hurt to cycle or walk; there were minor twinges on the down hill portion of my snowshoe yesterday but nothing bad. Skiing does not hurt, but I would hate to fall. There is some pain if I walk carrying something heavy.

It is not painful enough to be bone injury but it is definitely there.

Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like the same injury I had...it is most likely your piriformis muscle. The quickest way to fix this problem is stretching this muslce. Check out this link from the running doctor....

I saw a few specialist and nothing worked like the tennis ball.

good luck

I had terrible hip pain for several years because of the growth plates in my hips. If they are not fully fuesed it causes pain like you are describing. I'm a teenage runner and I wasn't fully grown at the which is why I had this problem. However, I've heard this can be a problem into adulthood. If you are younger, this could be the case. The only way to find out is to get an x-ray of the hip.

Maybe it's your sartorius muscle. Attaches at outer hip, crosses over quad, attaches at medial knee. Since two joints are involved, it can make anything other than baby steps difficult. Also, the pain can be hard to pinpoint, since it is such a long muscle. I tore this muscle a few years ago. Sometimes my thigh just ached and ached, sometimes I had pain in my outer hip (bursa irritated where the muscle attached), sometimes I had pain around my knee.

when I had a torn sartorius I went to a great physical therapist. Treatment was rest (well, I couldn't reall run anyway...), ice, massage, gentle stretching, eventually strengthening exercises. This was a really frustrating injury that took weeks and weeks to heal. I had different kinds of massage from the PT, but all "deep" (=ouch). One kind was to break up knots and scar tissue in the muscle, so in the thigh. One was for relief where the muscle attached at the hip. This was at the bursa in the outer part of my hip and it really hurt.
One thing you could try, to pinpoint whether it is the sartorius is to sit on the floor with the soles of your feet together and let your knees drop to the side. If the injuried side doesn't open up like the OK side...

You're training for a marathon. Have you ramped up too fast? I had hip bursitis (trochanter bursitis) which sounds like what you may have. It's not pleasant, and the best thing for it, unfortunately for you, is to take some time off.

Go to a doctor. Soon, before you lose any more time.

What is 'stiffness'?
