what 'doctor' do I see for a hip injury?

Several months ago, I started getting odd pains on my left hip area afte I misplaced a foot while lifting some items. I believe the doctor's opinion then was to rest and take anti-inflammatories. Pains have mostly subsided so I tried getting back to a regiment of running (I haven't been able to due to other injuries in the past, so just using the couch-to-5k methods), but a week or so into that the pain started coming back, up to now where I have slightly noticeable irritations on my hip while I'm sitting as well.

The office of the first doctor I was seeing for this (an orthopedic physician) had some scuffles with the insurance I was using, and are no longer in-network for me to go to. This led me to another question I've had all along though -- am I seeing the right doctor?

I've sort of made the underlying assumption before that a doctor at a regular clinic doesn't have the know-hows for more specific injuries, but is this not a correct line of thought? What kind of doctor should I be going to first, and how would I best find one if I didn't have people around me that could give suggestions (I'm fairly new to the area)?
