Re: Hip/Groin Pain
I had similar pain for 2 years. Sore and stiff hip especially after running. I saw 4 MD's, 2 PT's had 2 MRI's, was told I have leg legth discrepancy
arthritis, ITBS, bursitis, labral tear, impingement blah, blah
blah. Didn't run for 1 1/2 years and still no better. Finally I had it scoped last week because my ortho said after 2 years
of no relief it's time to take a look in the joint. He also
thought my IT band was tight and causing chronic bursitis.
During surgery he found 2 labral tears that didn't show up on MRI, impingement (that he couldn't fix with a scope). A very tight IT band and a chronically inflamed bursa. He cut the IT
band and took out part of the bursa. He found no arthritis.
I had been using a heel lift for a year, getting massage, PT
and resting all prior to this with little relief. In less than a week, even with an incision, it feels better. Sorry this is so long. I feel for every one of you as I have been there, but if
you are not getting better after a few months it's time to move on and try something else or find a new MD or PT.

Re: Hip/Groin Pain
Can someone write about their hip labrum tear surgery? Are you back running like you want to?

Also has someone opted against surgery and is able to run successfully?

Re: Hip/Groin Pain
i just wanted to post an update in this thread. i finally went to my chiropractor last night because i still have the discomfort in my groin area. turns out it is my hip flexor. i told him everything i have done, what i feel and how i can run through it and it only hurts much later. he moved my leg around a lot and pressed here and there and finally pressed on the upper part of the muscle which is in the belly and OUCH!. that did it. i am sore today because he worked on the muscle but i am glad i know what it is. hip flexpor. he taught me some proper stretches for it too. i hope it feels better soon. 5K in a couple of weeks!

Re: Hip/Groin Pain
I am joining the ranks of the injured- hip people.

Background: I ran my 3rd marathon on March 25th. It was the Ocean Drive Marathon in Cape May, NJ. There was a 25 mph headwind the ENTIRE race. Obviously, everything hurt at the end. A few days later all the normal marathon aches and pains subsided and I ran 3.4 miles. I noticed some stiffness after a mile which seemed to nag throughout the run. The next day I did the elliptical machine and again, noticed some hip pain toward the end of the workout. The third day I ran 5.1 miles. Pain started about 1.5 miles in but was kind of a dull/nagging pain, so I finished the run. I was limping around the whole rest of the day. I spent the next 2 weeks taking 2 or 3 days off from running, then trying again with the same results. About 2 -2.5 miles into the run I would have the pain return.

I went to a sports rehab place and was examined by an M.D. He referrred me to a chiropractor in the same office. After doing Xrays, we discussed my severe scoliosis and leg length discrepency ( I already knew this). I was wearing custom orthotics I got last April; the chiro said to stop wearing them b/c he was going to devise a treatment plan for me. I was told no running and have been doing chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy ( ultrasound, massage, exercises, ice w/ electrostim) 3 x a week for the past 4 weeks. I am also getting new custom orthotics but they aren't in yet.

Last week (week 3 of treatment) they told me to "try" running. I did 45 minutes of walking 1 min/run 3 minutes 4 times. No pain, except some inner thigh soreness b/c I wasn't used to running without orthotics in over a year (this went away after a few days). This week I increased to 60 minutes of 1 min walking/5 minutes running. The last 5 or so minutes made my hip stiff on the treadmill the other day. I am trying my 2nd run of the week tonight.

It's still frustrating b/c at physical therapy when I get massaged the tendon is still painful.

This process is so slow and frustrating! I keep thinking what if something is really screwed up and I won't be able to run again? Guess I just need some support from you guys who are going through the same thing

Re: Hip/Groin Pain
I just wanted to reply to this topic. 10 days ago I had my arthroscopic surgery for my acetibulum labral tear in my hip. Even though I always had some form of pain, I was still running, rock climbing and stretch training up until the night before surgery.
So far the pain has been bareable post op. I go to see my doctor in one more week. I assume I will then have to have physical therapy. My leg was weight bearing the moment I got out of the hospital. By the 3rd or 4th day after surgery, I was moving around relatively easy without the need of crutches.
Right now, the pain in the groin is minimal, but I still have pain in my ankle and pulled muscle in my groin (from surgery) and numbness in my opposite foot and groin. I'm hoping the numbness is not due to nerve damage, but I won;t know until the swelling goes away.
I honestly think that it was a good decision to have the surgery. I can't wait to start running again soon. I hope this helps.
