Swollen upper shin with no pain?

In the past few days, I've noticed the upper shin of my right leg appears to be inflamed. I can see some slight swelling in the area.

Looking at this picture of shin pain: <http://www.med.umich.edu/1libr/sma/sma_shinpain_art.htm>

None of the highlighted areas are where I have swelling.

Anyway, I only noticed it by sight and then by touch. I hadn't felt a single bit of soreness or pain. I did some speed work tonight and wasn't bothered by it. It doesn't seem any better or worse, it's unchanged.

Complicating this fact is I have a big varicose vein right in that area. It starts on one side of my shin and goes over to the other side. I'm wondering if it's related. (I was going to have it removed this winter, but didn't want to stop running -- it was such a mild winter).

I've never noticed any swelling before, but I figure if I have no pain or discomfort, why bother with a doctor.

sounds like a fluid buildup. The vericose vein in the area also shows bad circulation. Use compression over time and see if the fluid goes away. Left alone the fluid would probably fill up too much and do more damage and pain

shin splint is a generic term, doesn't mean anything but my shin hurts
