BLISTERS? Can we go over again?

I have a blister on the side of my foot as a result of new inserts in my shoes. I have already drained it. Now what? I have a 5 mile race tomorrow morning. What do I do to the blister and what can I do to my shoe, I think it's a seam that caused the blister? Thanks.

Try Second Skin pads. I've not had good luck iwth them as they don't seem to stay on. I've had best luck with 2" cloth tape.

Many things to try.
Duct tape.
Dr Scholls blister pads
mole skin
second skin

Are the inserts OTC or from a Dr? If they are prescribed by a dr, they need to adjust them to make sure you are not getting blisters. If they are OTC, then throw them out

clean the area very well with an alcohol pad.
this not only reduces the likelihood of infection, but it also makes the dressings adhere to the skin better.

drain the blister on the edge with a sterile pin
put a piece of spenco 2nd skin on top (don't forget to remove the two peices of backing.
put a piece of mole skin over the 2nd skin.
if it's in a high friction area, put a single layer of duct tape over the moleskin.

If you can find it, use Blist-o-Ban, by SAM Medical. It's very hard to find, but the best product on the market for blisters.

Maybe get a double layer sock at your running store.

If you can figure out where the seam in the shoe is, consider doing this.

Take a screwdriver that has a nice smooth (not gouged or beaten up) rounded handle base. Put the screw driver in a vise so the handle is pointing up. Put your shoe over the screw driver handle and rub it back and forth with a fair amount of pressure over the bad seam. This should soften it up quite a bit.

I highly recommend the double layer socks or just simply wear two socks. I used to get blisters quite often on my long runs until I started wearing a thick sock to get the cushion over a thin wicking sock.

that's what I use too. Double layer socks. The running ladie at Runners World told me to get them. Made by Wright Socks or something. Quite costly 3 pairs for $20 or so

Wow, I wish I'd have seen this thread 2 hours ago! I have a blister from Saturday's golf shoes (18 holes) and its been getting worse because of my running (the shoes/socks haven't been a problem in the last 2 years)...now not only is the one open and bleeding, ouch, but the other one is now the size of a half dollar instead of a nickel. OY!

I'm going to try these tips...thanks!

Double layer socks? Are they made for running? Do your feet get really sweaty? I'm interested because I have a blister problem. One of my shoes is too big, and I'd rather not dash out to get yet another pair of new running shoes if I can fix this with socks.

Yes they are made for running and no you're feet don't get sweaty. They use two thin layers of syn poly fibers, often coolmax. They're not really thicker than other socks. One of the more common brands is Wright Socks. Bay Six also makes/made a nice one that added a fiber that is very slick to further reduce friction.

If your shoe is too large you might consider knocking out some of the volume by using what's referred to as a 5iron. Take another old insole and cut off anything that goes up (arch, around the heel, etc). Insert that under your normal insole. It should reduce the volume substantially and last for about 100 miles. That said, you're really better off just getting a shoe that fits. You can cause injury and discomfort trying to force the wrong shoe for your foot.
